Short term performance increase question
Ok, so started training earlier this year to cycle longer, climb hills better, lose weight, and improve my all-around fitness.
Started with 3 early morning trainer sessions per week. 2 at a decent pace, and 1 which included 4 minute intervals (4 minutes as close to 120 rpm as possible, 4 minutes at 90 rpm, through 6 cycles).
Also threw in a night MTB ride of at least 15 miles, a 20 mile road ride, and a long multi-hour or 20+ mile MTB ride within the same week. Also played full court basketball twice a week...
Managed to drop over 10 lbs. and it has thankfully stayed off even efter the following...
Bang, got a freakish back injury which kept me off the bikes for 5 weeks and was in physical therapy twice a week. Was just getting back into rythm, with the long MTB weekend ride and 2-3 trainer sessions per week (1 1/2 weeks worth) and bang, got hit with Lyme's Disease. Symptoms nailed me over night and laid me out for a week. All that is on the mend and I have about 2 1/2 weeks to try to improve what fitness I have left before a major MTB trip the first week of August. I have basically lost 7 weeks of training time.
Was thinking about diving back into my original schedule from up top, but some friends have said not to. Ride a MAX of 3 times week. I'm ready to ride, feel like I could ride 5 to 6 days a week, but I do not want to screw myself up before my trip.
Was planning on 3 rides per week and 2 trainer sessions and a medium pace, no intervals. Basically 5 times on the saddle which some of my friends have said is way too much coming off an injury and illness...
Anything anyone would be willing to recommend?

Being on the bike five times a week doesn't sound like way too much, as long as you aren't going too hard. In fact, I'd have suggested that the way back into it was frequent, but relatively easy, rides. So just make sure you listen to your body and ease off or rest if you are getting tired.
