Probably a dead horse... protein powder?
Hey guys. I'm looking to start doing weight training again (haven't really done a structured phase since I started racing) and am looking to try out using protein powder.
So, I was wondering... whey or soy or...?
From there, what's a good quality protein that won't break my bank? Maybe something in bulk like 5pound tubs or...?
Essentially, I'm a complete and total noob to the protein powder stuff, and need some background and guidance.
Thanks!

Just eat normally. You probably already eat more than enough protein. If you're really worried, eat some nuts.

most people will suggest whey based protein powder. Shoot for about 1/2 gram of actual protein per pound of body weight per day in your daily diet. More if riding lots of miles or if doing lots of weight training. I was surprised to discover that I was getting much less than that amount, so I buy a 6 pound bag at Costco for about $25 ?, and have 25 grams of protein in a glass of milk after long rides ( 45 to 65 miles).

As a type II diebetic I have found hard rides or hard work outs my Bloodsugar rises from my workout. So I will drink a glass of Whey Protein about an hour before I ride and after I ride. My Blood Sugar Levels stay in line when I do that. Otherwise I think I would go with the suggestion above as to just eating right.

Incorrect. Most people, even ones eating a healthy balanced diet, don't get enough protein. Joe Friel reco's about 90 to 135 grams a day for a 50 year old, 150 pound cyclist in training. Do the math and you either need supplements or a real commitment to a healthy protein rich diet.

I've read that if you eat too much protein your bones get weaken since the body can't store protein and converts it to organic acids and the calcium in the bones is the only thing that neutralizes these acids. So to counteract this, drink more milk and eat more yogurt.

Last time I bought whey protein, BJ's had the best price. There's a lot of controversy concerning eating anything from soy. Whey isolate is the purest form of whey and the best or cleanest for you to take in. I only have a protein shake if I've weightlifted or worked out hard running or biking. I take it in milk with a banana or some other fruit and 2 Tb of oatmeal mixed in a blender.

I use optimum nutrition whey a few times a day, some casein at night. Eat lots of lean meats, nuts, and whole grains. Probably get more than I need, but that's my old weight lifting mind set. Works good for me, lost lots of weight and gained some muscle.

I low-carb so I've got no shortage of protein in my diet, but I was concerend about a low-carb recovery fuel. Whey isolate is just about the only one that works well under our paradigm. Add a small amount of heavy cream for some fat, maybe a littl fiber and its a perfect low carb recovery fuel. more potassium and sodium than gatorade to boot. Body fortress was the best deal I could find at my local navy exchange

I am using my body type as a diet starting point. Being an ectomorph, ie really skinny and lanky my diet should be 50/30/20 (carb, protien, fat). I use Livestrong to help me track my food intake and I am supposed to intake about 3200 calories a day.
I use Optimum nutrition for Whey Protien. Its good, cheap, and available everywhere. MHP is another good brand slightly more expensive as it is a 12 hour feed which is better right before bed or as a meal replacement.
As with any protein you can use milk or half and half for a stronger shake. Or you could mix it with peanut butter, flax seed and fruit for an uber smoothie.

I really enjoy smoothies after weight lifting or after a ride. I've found one protein powder flavor that tastes much better than anothers: GNC 100% Whey Chocolate Caramel. Here's my smoothie recipe -- it tastes a lot like a milkshake:
8 oz water from fridge
1 scoop GNC 100% whey protein powder (Choc Caramel. it has sucralose in it)
2 TBS Heavy Whipping Cream
2 frozen cubes of Heavy Whipping Cream
1 frozen strawberry
1-2 tsp Psyllium husks (add this at the end, or it will get too thick)
Optional: 1-2 tsp DaVince Sugar Free coconut syrup
Blend
