Hardee's unveils new 'Monster'

Fast-food chain's new burger -- with 1,400 calories and 107 grams of fat -- will cost you $5.49.
November 15, 2004: 6:42 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Fans of Hardee's new "Monster Thickburger" may end up making "Big Mac" lovers look like waif-like supermodels.

Hardee's rolls out its new "Monster Thickburger," which contains two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese and mayonnaise on a buttered sesame seed bun.
As many fast-food restaurants cut back the fat and calories in their offerings, Hardee's Food Systems Inc. is betting that Americans are ready to sink their teeth into its new and improved "Monster" burger.

St. Louis-based Hardee's said its new burger boasts two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of American cheese and some mayonnaise -- all on a buttered, toasted, sesame seed bun.

The "Monster Thickburger" will cost about $5.49, Hardee's said. But chowing down on the 1,420-calorie burger, which contains 107 grams of fat, will cost around $7 with fries and a soda.

"The (original) 'Monster Burger' was one of our most popular menu items," Brad Haley, executive vice president of marketing for Hardee's, said in a statement. "(But) it's now a 'Thickburger.'"

Many fast-food chains, including McDonald's (Research) and Wendy's International (Research), have tried to offer healthier menu items to cater to Americans on low-fat, low-carb diets.

But Hardee's said the "Monster Thickburger" is not all it has to offer on its menu.

"In about 30 days, we will be introducing a BBQ chicken sandwich that would only have 4 grams of fat and 300 calories. We just have a wide range of selections for everybody," Haley said.

Hardee's is owned by CKE Restaurants (Research) of Carpinteria, Calif., whose stock rose about 1 percent Monday.

------------------------------------
Makes a Wendy's triple cheeseburger look healthy!!!
------------------------------------

Here's the grease de resistance, according to each of the restaurant chains' Web sites:

• Hardee's Two-thirds Pound Double Bacon Cheeseburger has 1,301 calories, including 864 calories from fat.

• Jack in the Box's Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger has 1,120 calories, including 680 calories from fat.

• Burger King's Double Whopper with Cheese has 1,060 calories, including 620 calories from fat.

• Wendy's Classic Triple with cheese has 940 calories, including 510 calories from fat.

• McDonald's Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese has 770 calories, including 430 calories

Wow. It's too bad that Low Carb diets suck.

'Eat no fat' dieters beat no-carb bunch

MARILYNN MARCHIONE
ASSOCIATED PRESS

LAS VEGAS—Regardless of how they shed pounds in the first place, those who lost the most weight and stayed that way did it by limiting fat rather than carbohydrates, according to new research that could add fuel to the backlash against low-carb diets.

Dieters have been turning away from Atkins-style plans as a long-term weight-control strategy, and the new study gives them more reason: Low-fat plans seem to work better at keeping weight off.

"People who started eating more fat ... regained the most weight over time," said Suzanne Phelan, a Brown Medical School psychologist who presented results of the study yesterday at a meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity.

The study used the National Weight Control Registry, a decade-old effort to learn the secrets of success from people who had lost at least 30 pounds and kept them off for at least a year. The registry is run by doctors from the University of Colorado in Denver, the University of Pittsburgh and Brown University in Providence, R.I.

They studied 2,700 people who entered the registry from 1995 through 2003. Their average age was 47, most were women, and they had lost an average of 72 pounds initially. Doctors compared their diets to see whether one type or another made a difference in how much weight they had lost and how much they had regained a year later.

All reported eating only about 1,400 calories a day, but the portion that came from fat rose — from 24 per cent in 1995 to more than 29 per cent in 2003 — while the part from carbohydrates fell, from 56 to 49 per cent.

The number who were on low-carb diets (less than 90 grams a day) rose from 6 per cent to 17 per cent during the same period.

The type of diet — low-fat, low-carb or in between — made no difference in how people lost weight initially.

But those who increased their fat intake over a year regained the most weight. That meant they ate less carbohydrates, because the amount of protein in their diets stayed the same, Phelan said.

"Only a minority of successful weight losers consume low-carbohydrate diets," she and the other researchers concluded.

Colette Heimowitz, a nutrition expert and spokeswoman for the Atkins diet organization, noted that the study considered 90 grams to be low-carb, while Atkins recommends 60 grams for weight loss and 60 to 120 for weight maintenance.

She said that for many of the dieters studied, "the carbs aren't low enough for them to be successful." They also should have replaced carbs with more protein rather than fat, she said.

I had to follow the link and scrutinize the article because I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT WAS REAL! Yeesh, live it up America. I suppose you could justify eating that, if you were Arnold Schwarzenegger 25 years ago. I'm kind of babbling 'cuz I'm speechless. A buttered bun, huh? WOW.

"Even Subway has a variety of sandwiches with more than 1,000 calories, including the Double Meat Meatball Marinara Sub. The 12-inch version has 1,480 calories and 76 grams of fat.

Apple bees has had that for a while.
My girlfriend ordered one a couple months ago, I think it was called the NY burger or something. It was stacked like a big mac. Two half pound patties, four strips of bacon, mayo, two slices of cheddar and two slices of american cheese. We ended up sharing it.

How about a SIX POUND BURGER???

https://www.snopes.com/photos/commercials/bigburger.asp

Claim: A series of photographs shows a restaurant's 6-pound hamburger offering.

Status: True.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2004]

Would you like fries with that?

Hungry!?

A 6 lb. Burger. Where's the beef? It's at a Pennsylvania pub that serves the world's biggest burger — weighing in at NINE lip-smacking pounds! That's no whopper — you can actually get this meat monster for $23.95, loaded with all the fixings: Two whole tomatoes, a half-head of lettuce, 12 slices of American cheese, a full cup of peppers, two entire onions, plus, a river of mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard.

Origins: Even though consumers are increasingly opting for healthier foods these days, some people still prefer good ol' fatty standards such as burgers, cheese, french fries, and ice cream. And as long as customers want those things, some eateries will attempt to attract their business by offering larger portions of them than the next guy.

One extreme in the big burger business is represented by Denny's Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, which offers several varieties of "large" for the extreme burger enthusiast: a 2-pound Challenger, a 3-pound Baby Boy, and, as displayed in the pictures shown above, a 6-pound Ye Olde 96er (so named because it contains 96 ounces of meat).

As advertised on the pub's web site, a 96er sells for $23.95 and includes the following fixings and condiments:
Two whole tomatoes

A half-head of lettuce

12 slices of American cheese

A full cup of peppers

Two entire onions

A river of mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard
Denny's (not to be confused with the national chain restaurants of the same name) offers prizes for customers who can completely consume one of their big burgers within a designated time period: a T-shirt, certificate, and 50% discount for anyone who finishes a Challenger (2 lb. burger) within an hour; a T-shirt, certificate, and 100% discount for anyone who can polish off a Baby Boy (3 lb. burger) in 90 minutes or less; and something special for anyone who manages the unthinkable and puts away a whole 96er (6 lb. burger) in under three hours. (That "something special" has yet to be awarded, as no one has so far successfully accomplished the feat.)

I love Hardees Thick Burgers! I couldnt decide what to get for dinner but now I think Ill go to Hardees.

I swore off McDonalds after watching Supersize Me. Funny thing is Hardees has more bad stuff in it but the volume of the food is much larger.

If people are that STUPID to eat it, it's not Hardee's fault or any other fast food joint's fault.
People have a choice of what to eat.

Hardee's is gettin a lot of publicity out of this.
I heard a local talk guy today, he had one, he said Hardee's was packed..LOL
He said he didn't eat the bacon or the bun, I guess he's a Atkins guy.
Reported it wasn't any different to him than eating a couple pieces of meatloaf LOL

Nah, its just that bologna is traditionally not the healthiest of the lunchmeats, just the cheapest (at the Aldi by my place), and in the college kid's realm, that is most key. I prefer turkey, but it goes bad too fast

heehee, yeah lips and a55holez don't spoil too quick. Bologna is about the same thing as a giant slice of hot dog (shudder). A nuked potato would probably be healthier, but none of us eat perfect.

I hear ya. It is really hard to eat and train like a racer when you have a real life and you are your own nutritionist. I rarely have enough time to ride, so I sprint from class to class on my fixed, and do 30 milers when I can, and hit the trails on the weekends. All I know is that I am leading a much healthier life than most people my age, and thats all i can ask for right now.

I would so eat one of those Thickburgers, once, after hours of riding and a visit to the gym. Fortunately for my health, we don't have a Hardee's here.

Heh, when I lived in VA, there was restaurant called Satterwhite's in my rural town in the middle of nowhere. They served the Mammoth Burger there, which, at the time, they believed was the only burger of its kind in the world- five pounds of beef sandwiched between two enormous buns. By my signature, you can tell that I used to be a much larger guy. So, I ordered this thing, and, ytou guessed it, at the whole damn thing. When you're 15 and 260 pounds of pure blubber, It ain't hard to do. Got teh sandwich for free and a t-shirt. I don't have the t-shirt anymore, but I still have the pride of knowing that I ate the Mammoth Burger.
