What to eat what to eat...

I want to make the most out of my piddly nightly workouts to build the muscles. Mostly in the arms and the abs.

What exactly should i be eating throughout the day. Protein after workouts or before? Should i be eating a lot to build the arm muscles? Or less to make the abs look better?

If y'alls can inform me what i should be eating to be building the muscle, ill eat it. Im clueless right now

same here. I think we're supposed to eat protein after a workout to help re-build the torn muscle. I'm not sure though.

this is the best explanation I've found on the web.

to build muscle you need protein. The football coach at my school told it's approximately 1g of protein for every pound you are. So a 175lb guy would take 175g of whey protein.

I *think* that you are supposed to take the whey protein after a workout, but I'm not completely sure. Haven't been taking it for awhile.

As for abs you need to do crunches, eat less and do cardio to burn fat. Atleast thats what I did.

Edit: https://www.thepumpingstation.com/mus...pplements.html

Theres a site I just googled, it has some explanations of the various types of supplements. Note: they are a store so some of what they say may not be completely true.

Heres where im confused... I should eat less to build the abs, and do cardio to burn the fat above the abdomen, but then doing that cardio stuff eats away at arm muscles right? And i have to eat more to get larger biceps...

Im not into supplements, i just want to know what i should eb eating around the house more of.

I've never heard that doing any cardio exercise "eats" arm muscles ... a lot has to happen for a muscle to begin degenerating or for your body to start using it as enery ... and I doubt very many people push themselves to that limit. In any event ... when I was focusing on muscle building I ate a lot of tuna fish, cottage cheese and eggs (about 10 a day, half just whites, half with the yolks) ... A lot of people also think a spoonfull of peanut butter a day is a good idea ... But cottage cheese before bed is really a good idea because the protein in it is "burned" slower by your body so you're less likely to produce a defecit during the 8 hours you're sleeping.

I thought stuff like running and biking starts to eat your arm muscles, hence all the scrawny cyclists (including meself)

wait, so what happens if you don't eat protein before bed? Should you eat something with protein every night before bed? I guess I'm asking does eating the protein before bed basically build muscle while you sleep?

There's a lot more to building muscle than just eating protein ... but yes everything I've ever read has said that eating protein (preferably foods with casein protein like the kind found in cottage cheese) before bed is a good idea because it prevents a protein shortage in your body while you're sleeping.

And i'd wager the reason most cyclists have scrawny arms is because cycling doesn't naturally work your arms in such a way that you'd develop those muslces. Further, it doesn't stand to reason that long periods of "cardio" exercise would cause your body to 'eat" the muscle in one part of your body and not another. Your body doesn't choose which region to gather energy from when you're, say, burning fat, it's simply burned uniformly (for the most part) across your entire body.

so if I'm doing weights for a cumulative 3 hours a week but not eating enough protein to help rebuild my muscles, what's going to happen? Am I not going to see results?

Exactly ... Even more so if you're not getting enough sleep, eating enough sugar, drinking enough water etc...

damn, I didn't realize that. So if I weigh 165 pounds, I should probably be eating 165 grams of protein a day? What about on those days that I lift? Should I go over 165 grams?

Well that mens health says that you should eat carbs for energy before workout, maybe even a lil meal, and then protein afterwards to build the muscle. I do curls with firelogs every night before bed (ya i should buy some weights), and usually eat a bagel with cream cheese after. Is that like a decent cottage cheese substitute?

So to get more specific, what things are high in protein? cottage cheese is gross for me. bananas?

I would stay away from cream cheese, especially the regular kind. High in fat. Most meats (chicken, turkey, tuna is real high) are high in protein. Also, for some reason these Sara Lee Whole Weat Bagels have a fair amount as well. Not sure if whole weat naturally has a lot of protein.

uh veggies I don't think so. Beans may have some protein. Pasta has a lotta carbs of course, but not as much protein as the meats I don't think.

Machka, we are working out, we just want to get the most results by eating better.
So chicken, breads, tuna, all high in protein... excellent

Sure, but I don't think food makes that much of a difference. You mentioned that you were doing "piddly nightly workouts" ... my suggestion is to eat whatever you want, just workout more and harder!!

I exercise A LOT ... mainly cycling, but also weightlifting and other things.

As for the eating thing ... I eat whatever I feel the urge to eat, whenever I feel the urge to eat it. Some of it is good. A lot of it isn't.

I've been through a lot of medical testing lately. Turns out I'm doing something VERY right. My Dr said she has never seen blood work (and she did extensive testing there) come back more perfect, and the other things that were tested (heart, lungs, etc.) came back with results much better than normal.

My conclusion ... food doesn't have much to do with how fit I am. I figure you could eat better if you wanted, or you could eat whatever you wanted ... it won't make much difference at all.

ask Jim Fixx if food matters...oh wait, you can't...he died of a heart attack...one of the most prominent runners in recent history pretty much thought that he could eat whatever whenever also...he really liked potato chips...

I think that everybody has to watch what they eat...I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted, but I always chose healthy things to eat...lower fat...not too much bad carbs (white sugar, etc)..

Now I really have to be careful what I eat...I have a more than full time job and don't have time to exercise all day

I also have had blood work recently and cholesterol came back almost off the charts...on the low (good) side, so I must be doing something right, too...what always works for 1 person will not always work for someoone else, and tha answer isn't always just to exercise more.
