what do you drink?
recently one of my coworkers suggested i should take some muscle milk to help with my gains before and after my ride. never tried that before, but the chocolate version taste yummy. but then i read this and good thing i'm finished with the 8 bottle i bought.
i'm not allergic to soy, so i'm thinking of getting some organic whey soy protein based without cholestrol and low sugar? anyone have some recommendations? thanks.. |
I drink Nuun. Gatorade in bottles if I want sugar. Hammer I've been told is good, but tastes like chalk. I want magnesium, potassium, and sodium.
|
When I ride, I drink ....... water.
If you want to consume some protein after your ride, have a chicken sandwich. |

You don't need massive quantities of protein. A common post-ride ratio has been stated as 1:4 protein to carbs. Your chicken with rice and broccoli is about right. But of course you can mix it up ... make a bean and cheese dip and have nachos if you want.

lean red meat, chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, an egg or two, maybe a shake or smoothie if i want to drink something. You don't have to look too hard to find 1.4g/kg/day and to place a reasonably percentage of that immediately following your ride.

Water. Unless I start feeling weak, then I buy a 20oz bottle of low-fat chocolate milk.
|
Did a 25 mile ride with climbs today. Drank chocolate milk right after. felt great! Followed by steak, steamed kale and 1cup of udon.
thanks for the advice Rowan... ill check out cfboy's post. |
Plain whole milk for anything longer than one hour. Chocolate milk if I feel like I need the sugar and a store is available on the ride.
|
I sweat a lot and thus need lots of fluids when I ride so I drink water. I have chosen Gatorade on an all day ride or tour though. I get my protein from solid foods.
|
Gatorade G2 on rides over 20 miles, otherwise water.
|
Coconut water is AWESOME for replenishing electrolytes - I've been packing it recently and love it :D
|
Something which is rich nutritionally i take natural and healthy stuff usually juices and fruit juices are there.
Because milk is undoubtedly healthy and having it with some kinda fruit can be something which helps us a lot in boosting the energy. physical therapy billing |

Water mostly. Gatorade and coke are alternatives during a long ride.
Afterward chocolate milk or a protein shake as I do not eat meat. Cottage cheese also provides me enough protein. |
Coconut water has a lot of potasium but not much sodium. Wrong electrolyte profile.
http://www.theatlanticwire.com/natio...ood-you/40954/ http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertgl...t-water-craze/ The three major brands are owned by megacorps like Coke and Pepsi. It's triumph of marketing- getting people to pay big bucks for what was a waste product. It's also nasty tasting. I have used Hammer HEED but it does not agree with me on rides over 5-6 hours. I'm trying Skratch Labs now. I prefer drinks that are not very sweet- after hours riding sweet stuff does not taste good. I find it difficult to get even half a Coke down. For rides under 2-3 hours I eat a good breakfast and don't need calories on the ride. |
Was drinking Gatorade then switched to Skratch Labs "Secret Drink Mix". Better tasting and easier on the gut. And, Skratch doesn't have some of the added chemicals that Gatorade has. For rides under 2 hours - just water. Over that, then I use the drink mix. Post ride - choco milk if it's been a hard ride, otherwise water is fine. If it's been a really hard ride - then water with some fermented barley, hops and malt.:thumb:

During rides I have one water bottle with water only and one bottle with Hammer Heed (two scoops (strawberry) mixed with water).
Post rides (following a difficult ride) I drink coconut water (12oz) mixed with Hammer Recoverite (chocolate) and rice milk (2oz). |
20 miles or less, water.
Over 20, Gatorade G2: lo cal if not too strenuous, regular if I'm gonna need to keep up with the group. Chocloate milk after the ride, tho I have used Rockin' Refuel after when I have it. Pretty good stuff... |
Thanks for asking this, I've been wondering myself. I started out as a water only or 50% water 50% gatorade drinker before/during and a chocolate milk after, but have been trying some other stuff. Heed, Nuun and EFS all seem to upset my stomach a little bit, as did Recoverite. Think I'm gonna stick to my chocolate milk for after but still exploring other options for before/during... any suggestions?
|
@achance: i'm running water and gatorade combo right now for during the rides that's 20 miles or more with climbs. as for afterwards, i'll drink True Vitality Vegan Protein Chocolate Shake With Dha. so far, that hasn't upset my stomach at all. for before the ride, i just eat a ProBar or a 20g protein bar + water and i'm off on the bike riding.

Snowman219: one of my riding buddy is like that too. no carbs and nothing wheat related. as it turned out he was allergic to wheat and since he found out.. he's removed all those from his diet. now he's 15 lbs leaner! the only mass on him is muscle from natural food.
before i would drink a True Vitality protein shake after my lunch ride, then eat my lunch. i quickly saw my weight climbed up... till my coworker told me.. that's a meal replacement drink dude. so now, after my 1 hr lunch ride, i just drink and wait for dinner. now weight is back to normal. |
