sickness and heartrate
can anyone give me an informed answer on how being ill or sick affects heart rate? i recently have had a bout of salmonella poisoning and have been off the bike for about 2 days. last night did a small workout and for kicks, tried to get my heart rate up towards zone 5, and had a bit of difficulty. i know food poisoning is somewhat different than being sick in a normal sense, but it can cause similar fatigue. not overly concerned about it, but as i am racing this weekend, just curious if anyone can give me some info. thanks.

I dont have any specific info for you but yes, I'm sure it does. Just about everything has an effect on heartrate. The human body has many built compensatory mechanisms.

I have a friend that only wears his heartrate monitor to know when he is getting sick. He says that his rate differs from his normal rate before he feels the actualy sickness.
