And I'm not talking about cat urine such as coors light or pabst- I mean a real IPA, Amber, etc.

I guess this can be broken down to how many calories are burned per mile on average, compared to the calorie content in a real beer.

Boy I really want to know this one. I just started brewing my own beer. I think I might be afraid of this answer...

197 calories in one 16 ounce bottle. Depends on how hard ya ride. I'd say a good half hour at least.

How many calories burned during exercise will depend on your weight, type of exercise, intensity of exercise and duration of exercise. The web site linked below may give you a good approximation but it doesn't take into account factors like one's percentage of bodyfat. Lower bodyfat means more calories will be burned during exercise. Muscle tissue is very inefficient at producing mechanical work and produces much wasted energy in the form of heat. Fat just sits there.

The rule of thumb is 40 calories per mile (at a brisk pace), so around 5 miles for a 200 calorie beer.

Oh, boy. All that malt that goes into a 5 gallon batch? Calorie counting is the last thing on my mind when I'm working up some wort!

I'm dry-hopping an IPA at the moment. It'll be a hoppy St. Paddy's day this year.

This particular recipe we call the IPD. . . Instant Panty Dropper.

Well, most adults around 150# or more, will burn about 900 calories going 17-18mph in one hour of riding.
The average beers usually have about 150-200 calories depending on whether it's michelob or a heavier ale.

So, if you are riding fairly vigorously at 18mph, it should take you at most...

About 15 minutes. Less if you are really pushing hard.

I've always done the 20mins/5 miles per beer.

That is more my justification of quantity I'm drinking and motivation for my ride the next day.

Does anyone remember the Bicycling article on beer being good for you? Particularly post-ride... all of the anti oxidants, carbs and calories.

How true is this statement? I understand that carbs consumed directly after exercise are beneficial, but say you indulge in 3 or so beers after a ride. Will 2 of those actually just go directly to your gut and add to the ubiquitous beer belly? Will it negate the benefit of all that exercise you just did?
