Because the particular pedal doesn't matter, except in a few rare cases team riders use their sponsor pedal. Lance stuck with Shimano because, well, he was Lance. Buy yourself a pair of good shoes and you won't worry about it either.

I would guess that the surface area of a pedal doesn't matter at all if the rider is using a stiff-soled cycling shoe. The pedal and sole are locked together, and the cyclist's foot is interacting only with the sole, which is far larger than any pedal.

OP think of it this way, it doesnt really matter what pedal you use of even which muscle works the least. in fact the ones that get neglected because they do the smallest amount of work are often the most troublesome ones. cycling is great for getting places quickly and easily but it also doesnt produce what id call well rounded athletecism on its own. do it for enough years and your body will adapt but also neglect other bit of maintenance. ask me to ride 30 miles. sure no problem. ask me to try your wife zumba routine, no way id twist my knee....so really, it doesnt matter which works the least, they all need to work in unison for optimal riding....

Those lollipops have too little surface area and can cause you to lose some pushing power efficiency. Did you think about that?

Edit: I mean the down stroke efficiency.

That only applies if you are using a regular shoe with them. Speedplays use the cleat that is screwed to your shoe (call it a system). Actual shoe engagement/contact area is bigger than most others. Ultimately, it is the shoe flex.

You can't still show me a single sprinter who does ride those lollipops.

This is obviously an old list. Speedplay doesn't have this year's team listing up yet. I've read that Thor Hushovd also raced with them. However, as you will, or whatever, as is said now.
