the biggest advice i can give you is to be patient and do your research...
i shopped for a bike for 2 months, wanted to spend less than $700 and my expectations were very high. needles to say i was dissapointed every week i lost bidding on ebay until i found the perfect bike on craigslist.org and bought it the next day. met all my requisits and for only $500.
i got a bike with full ultegra componentry, year-2001, weight<20lbs, perfect size...
