Clipless or toe straps?

Clearly clipless pedals give you a little more power, but would it make sense to put my only pair on a the tri bike I hope to get or just put some platform with toe straps on it instead (save time in transisitons?). My first couple of races will be dus till I can get some serious pool/lake/water time in, my swimming sucks

Its not the pedals that give youy the power, but the shoes. If you can master a good cyclocross mount/ dismount, you will be much better off than cycling with running shoes. Running shoes soles are much too soft and too much energy is wasted flexing them. Plus, they won't last so long.

Plus - how much time would you really save ? Try it in your driveway & see.
