Tapering off before an event?

I'm guessing opinions vary, but how do you taper off your workouts as the event date approaches? When's your last hard workout? Last workout? Etc.? I'm thinking of taking 2 full days off prior. Mistake? Thanks in advance.

this is my first season- per my coach's schedule, my last workout is an easy 30 minute activity of choice the day before the event.

In fact, here's the week's schedule:

M: Rest
T: 30 minutes of running. Do 1, 100 yard strider, every 5 minutes.
W: Get in 1000-1200 yards. Make half your swim a series of drills
Th: Rest
F:Easy 30 minute your choice workout. Loosen up your muscles. Stay relaxed.
Sat: RACE!
i woke up one morning and i stepped out of bed | had to get a bike, had to paint it red
Of all the treasures I have, itís the memories that are the most precious.

from what I read, a taper is a full week's worth of backing off. You still mix in some intensity, but mostly to keep things loose. Two days is probably not enough taper. For example, typical century plans that have long rides on the weekend have a pretty serious taper; two weeks prior to the event will be an 80 mi ride, but a week out the longest ride may be only in the 40mi range....

Starting the Monday before the event I usually work out 2-3 days max (depending on my schedule) and all lighter workouts (3 mile runs, light 1k swims, 15 mile bike rides). The day before I try to do nothing other than a light jog or bike ride and stretch.

Usually its a bike ride the day before the race as I get neurotic about something breaking on my bike so i just do some final checks of all the gears and stuff on the road.
