What do you wear for training in the pool?
I want to start more swimming and all I have swimming wise is surf short style things. These really aren;t great for doing lengths and I was wondering what everyone else wore.
I'm not where near fast enough to pull of a full body suit type thing, and am not narcasistic enough to wear little things. What else is there and what brands are good? Thanks in advance. |
Nike Swim Jammers.... not thongs at all, really are just tri shorts minus the padding.....
|
A TYR Tri-Suit, a generic swim cap, and TYR goggles (the big goofy looking ones), all the same stuff (except the swim cap) that I race in.
|
In the pool: speedos, swim cap and goggles.
I don't wear the tri gear except under the wetsuit when training in open water. |
I wear a drag-suit and goggles in the pool. The drag-suit is cut the same as a speedo but there is another, mesh-like, baggy layer of fabric over that to increase drag. I can't see a reason why you are so sensitive about your body's image as to fear wearing a 'speedo'.

Nothin'
j/k Nike jammers. Most tri shorts don't like chlorine too well. |
Budgie Smugglers. :D
|
I wear a regular swim suit (the baggy style). I figure the extra resistance will help make me a stronger swimmer. I need all the help I can get in that department...

I wonder what isn't "chlorine" friendly in some suits? And to the OP - If you are concerned with what you look like in a tri-suit, which is nothing more than a 1 peice version of tri shorts and a tri top, then you either are very new at this, or you haven't been paying attention to those around you. I have seen some very scary sights are races. |

Frankly, I don't like the baggys and I definitely don't like the resistance. IMO, you want to learn to streamline yourself to go as fast as possible. Anything that slows you down is self-defeating as far as improving your speed and technique. If you want to use resistance, use a pull-bouy and paddles. If you are modest, wear you workout suit under your baggies, and you can minimize embarrasment taking them off right befor you jump in, and putting them back on after. As a rule, I don't make a habit of parading around in my speedo, no matter how good a shape I'm in. I know some people are not comfortable with that, so I don't do it. |

Wear the cheapest jammers or suit you can find. If you plan on being in the pool at least 3 times per week for at least an hour, your suit will take a beating so it is best to get something cheap and in multiples, if possible. Finis.com has Hydrospeed suits for $20 or so. They are tight but stay on. For 90% off, you can't beat them.

I don't want to wear baggies because I just don't find them comfortable for longer periods of actuall swimming, fine for mucking about.
Speedo wise I just don't like them, maybe I'm just overly self concious about my groin area but that's just how I am, can't help it. I'm sure I'll look fine in a tri suit, I'm thin and athletic, I'm just not a very fast swimmer and will feel a bit of a poseur wearing one, and don't really need one either, they just cost more. I've been mainly considering stuff like this. But have no idea what company or material to look at getting. |
I am kind of allergic to chlorine and the biggest thing I care about swimming in a pool is getting my goggles in really tight, but any old polyester jammer or speedo or whatever suit you feel comfortable wearing would do. I got a Dolphin, a TYR and a Nike jammer and alternate between them. I don't care much about what I am wearing in a pool, they are not going to disintegrate

The cheapest jammer style suits I can find for the pool. The chlorine seems to take it's toll on anything pretty quickly.
The only time I wear tri-stuff in the pool is if I'm doing a swim/bike/run workout and don't want to change in between. Otherwise, my tri-shorts are too expensive to let them get destroyed by the chlorine. |

I have been wearing Nike jammers for pool workouts (very correct chlorine is not good with tri shorts). I am thinking of getting the square cut speedo briefs. not as small as the racing ones, but not as long as the jammers either.
