dealing with gear after transition area is closed?

Trying to get ready for the chicago tri this weekend

One thing I'm wondering about is if the transition area is closed at 5:45am, am i supposed to walk around barefoot for a few hours before my heat?. what do people wear and where do they put their gear before the swim?

right now, i'm thinking about wearing some old flipflops and throw them away before the swim

You just answered your question. Flip flops and t-shirt that you don't necessarily need back. If you get it back, great. If not, no big deal.

NYC usually has a gear drop, basically trucks near the swim start that each racer gets a bag with their number on it to toss in their shoes etc into and then pick up at the end of the race. I wouldn't put an ipod in there but some old shoes and a t-shirt, sure. I would imagine many big races have this as well with a long distance between the swim start and transition especially.

yeah, i was hoping for some kind of gear drop, but haven't read about it in any of the pre-race info. oh well.

another method could be to buddy up with someone in a later race and offer to hold each other's gear. or convince a friend/spouse/child to get up early and hold your stuff

I realize it's too late now, since you're probably down here wandering around already, but Chicago does have a "swim gear check" for this purpose.

Also, lots of people leave old flip-flops or shoes near the swim exit and put them on when they get out of the water. It's a long run on pavement back to T1 from the swim exit.

Yep. I saw the gear check when I got there put my old sneakers near the water exit and was able to jog past all the barefoot walkers. I heard someone say it was 475 meters, crazy.

you can also just put the stuff under your bike. thats what i do. really theres not all the much in transition, running shoes bike bike shoes, and race belt. then jsut shove your shirt under your running shoes and your regular shoes out of the way under the bike. Also this will add more things for you too look for when your coming in to the bike. i learned my lesson for only having shoes, i racked my bike on the wrong rack, becuase i was like the 5th person into the bike so i had nothing to look for.
