My worst event ever, Nations Tri, this weeknd....

I capped off a season of poor races today with a race that not only was just bad luck on my part (to cap off a season of poor training), but an absolute disdain for some (not all) of my fellow triathletes.

Unfortunately work and other commitments have gotten in my way this year, that and doing the NYC Triathlon on a 95 degree day didn't help, but I was looking forward to a solid ending for my season in DC at the Nations Tri.

So this morning starts with pouring rain. Ok that sucks but whatever I'll live, its rain, you're wet when you are out of the water anyway. So I start the swim (3rd wave) and I am admittedly not a fast swimmer, but I focused a LOT on the swim this year and I have improved tremendously. At about the 500m mark the next wave is passing through, so at about 800m I'm towards the middle of that wave. Now I've been bumped kicked punched etc its all part of the race in the water, but not this time. This time a guy (much larger than me) after bouncing off me 4 times took a hold of the back of my wetsuit and threw me out of the way. Seriously. I have been doing this for 3 years and know every which way to get bumped into, but he seriously took hold and threw me! And I'm 150 lbs, not huge but not exactly tiny.

It gets worse. I get out on the bike course which is soaked, so of course I am cautious. So cruising along there are some tiny little wet spots in the road that were all basically flat, if you saw these you'd never think there was any sort of hole, well one was a divot deep enough to suck in a 700c wheel. I let out every 4 letter word in the book trying to take control but me and my Argon 18 went down into the dirt on the side of the road, hard.

Heres the best part, I managed to unclip on the way to the ground so I was basically thrown from the bike (although the chain ring caught my ankle and I have a cut there down to the bone) and the bike lands half on the dirt and half in the road and I'm down on my back in the dirt. The next 2 guys pass and yell "are you ok, which I say "yeah I'm fine I think". About 3 seconds later another guy passes and yells, "GET THAT BIKE OFF THE ROAD".... I'm crashed, laying on my back and this prick who apparently thinks this race is the f-ing Olympics has the balls to yell that. We're on a perfectly straight portion (so he had to have seen me go down) on a wide 2 lane road.

I picked myself up and long story short finished the race bloodied up my sock and shoe and had to have the doctors look at it afterwards, but I'm ok (need a tetanus shot this week though) my bike OTOH will need to head to the shop my field repairs got me by but it's not making any good noises especially in high and low gear (probably the derailleur hanger). My final time was 3:16:55... pretty far off where I wanted to be, but not bad considering.

Overall maybe I'm just pissed off at the things that happened to me but the absolute ******y conduct of a couple of my competitors just exacerbated the whole thing. Seriously, its not like we are all doing this for money, heck even those that do have a hard time making money doing it. I totally understand being serious about it, I am very serious about my racing, but come on. There were 5200 people in this race today and I have seriously had my faith shaken about the quality of the Triathlon community if I could manage to encounter 2 such morons at my worst moments of the day.

As for the actual Nations Tri event, the course and everything is nice so is the online aspect of it, but there were a lot of little things that seemed disorganized or set up at the last minute... that and the huge lines for everything caused by the way it was set up. Overall probably not doing that race again.

Well at least you finished. Swim guy sounds weird, usually that only happens near the start, but I suppose it is one way to get through the course a second faster (climbing on people that is)

And yelling at someone over a bike crash doesn't make sense on a straightaway, coming out of a tight turn maybe, but a wide straightaway, that's just lame.

This is why I raced in Reston. Smaller event, less ******bags, more fun for all.

Sorry you crashed. That's never fun. Good job toughing it out, despite the gash on your ankle.

2 out of 5200 is 0.04%. That's a pretty low incidence of idiots if you ask me. Sounds like you just had some bad luck. I raced it yesterday as well and everything went much better than I expected considering the amount of people registered and the narrow bike course.

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

Who knows it might have been a smaller % than that. Might've encountered the same posterior orifice twice in the same tri.

Could be worse, Rogue Leader. Those jerks have to deal with themselves every day...

Thanks guys.

Boy never got a puncture wound before, its a pain, gotta change bandages twice a day. And when the doctor had to clean it out and cut the greasy dead skin out! wow nasty!!

Bike is at the shop now, normally I do my own maintenance but considering the severity of the crash I'd rather have a pro look at it. Hope the bill doesn't hurt more than the crash!

Put in a copy of The Bad News Bears (original version), drink a few beers, and be happy that you're not an over-competitive and delusional athlete who believes winning is more important than being a decent person.
