Shorts/top for short tri?
Signed up for first Tri in early Sept. Been looking at a variety of clothing without spending a ton of $$$$. Don't need a wetsuit for the swim as it's in a local lake and generally warm temps. Looked at some shorts that look like bike shorts with minimal padding. Are they OK for swimming in and getting right on the bike? Also looking at a top that's kind of like a rash guard for surfing. Thinking of just wearing those 2 for the whole event.
I actually have several pairs of bike shorts that have minimal padding and was thinking of just wearing those for the whole event. I'm sure the Pearl Izumi padding would feel like a diaper after a 500M swim though.
Haven't been to a "real" store yet for gear so was just wondering aloud. Well on the keyboard actually

I wear Triathlon specific shorts and a fairly tight Pearl Izumi Tri tank top. Tri shorts such as those offered by Desoto, have just enough padding for your bike segment, but are thin enough that you don't even feel them on the run. Also the Chamois will not absorb water and are very quick drying. The combo is fairly inexpensive and I can vary the jersey top to match the weather.

Your best bet is triathlon specific shorts. I don't know how bikes shorts would do after the water and you don't want rubbing throughout the bike and run. I wear a tight fitting technical running shirt on top.
