Ironman Augusta 70.3 Swim in jepoardy!
I just saw an Augusta news channel story about the Savannah River is now closed for swimming due to oil contamination. It is claimed that the Savannah River is the 3rd most polluted river in the US, and this is the 3rd time in the past several years the river has been closed to swimming due to an oil slick from an unknown source.
Hopefully upstream rains and opening of the flood gates will flush the river in time to open the river for the swim.

Open the gates and release the Kraken!!!!
Pretty sure there will be no shortage of water in the Gulf for our Ironman Florida in 6 weeks from Saturday. Just hoping we don't have RED FLAG conditions like last year.

Augusta FD has lifted the swim ban as of 9-18. 10 more days to the event, so most likely we are good to go. This is a river swim, so a problem like this will was away fairly fast. However, the source of the contamination is unknown (likely illegal dumping of waste products), and there is no guarantee that come 9-28 the same problem won't arise again. However, despite the fact that the Savannah river is the 3rd most polluted river in the US(yuck, I'm going to swim in this?) the swim ban has only been enforced 3 times in the last several years.
I'm more concerned about alligators! The live along the river in that area, but there has never been any reported incident. Whew! I just gotta swim faster than the slowest other guy!
