New Crank set but keep old bottom bracket

Hi all,

I just recently purchased a new fixie bike and I am looking to update some of the parts firstly is the crank, what i am wondering is can i buy a new crank set and keep the same square taper bottom bracket or would i need to also change that as well. Also thinking of updating my back cog for a better one so if anyone has any recommendations i would really appreciate it.

Thank you

Re the crank, yes it's absolutely fine to do that. There are different types of square taper (different standards) and you need to make sure you get one that's compatible with your bottom bracket. If you google Sheldon Brown and look up BB standards, there's lots there. However, I'd just pop out the existing BB cartridge and see what make / model it is, then quote that when you're looking at new cranks.
