Bike hire and/or riding groups in London

I'll be in London for vacation/holidays in late May/early June. Staying at the Hilton Tower Bridge, which is very close to the London Bridge Tube & rail station.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good bike shop that I can hire a bike from? I'm assuming I should bring my own helmet, shoes, gloves, and clothing. Can I also rent pedals?

Also--if anyone knows of any groups that do rides in or around that area, I'd appreciate that too.

Thanks for your help!

I'm not so sure about Shop rented bikes (although I'm sure its possible in most places). In london we have a load of 'Boris' bikes, where you basically insert your credit card and then it unlocks one of the bikes. - The TFL organisation also does introductory bike rides & I'm pretty sure there are cycle group rides with instructors etc.

I would advise using a helment with any form of riding in London as the traffic is very dense (especially around London Bridge - I used to ride over that bridge to work every day) and some of the drivers are...well...shouldn't have a license.

I believe that you can hire a Brompton quite cheaply from one of the main train stations, not sure which one or maybe they all have this facility?
