Good Cycling roads near St.Albans, Hertfordshire?

Hi All,

I'm going to be in the U.K. for business, actually a show for bicycle shop owners and dealers (I think "stockists" is the correct British term?) in St. Albans, Hertfordshire 17 Feb. through 20 Feb. and while I am all signed up for the Official Ride of the show (on the 17th) and the Company hosting the show has kindly offered to loan me one of their Eastside branded bikes, I would like to get in morning rides on 18th, 19th and 20th.

For these rides I am looking for advice on good cycling roads in the near area. Last year I took off on my own and made a round trip to Hemple-Hemstead (if I'm spelling those right?) and while I was good with staying on the left and cycling safely around the round-abouts the main road did have an almost constant stream of motor traffic (on a rather narrow B road).

Which is why I am on the U.K. bikeforum now, hoping someone who knows the area could recommend some roads with less motor traffic in that general area. I will be starting from Sopwell House, for those who know the area.

Thanks in advance!

Rick / OCRR

I didn't get any responses, but here is the route I took, as recorded by my Garmin: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/276256940

Here I am riding on the British side of the road in my OCRR jacket. Cool but not cold day, and mostly sunny too.

You will be glad you were not riding in Aberdeenshire the last few mornings it has been brilliant sunshine but -4 or 5 most days at 7am, brrr

Yes, thanks, I did have a good time in the U.K. The weather was not too bad and really not too different from what I had been riding in here in Southern California.
Of course some of the roads were quite narrow compared to the U.S. and riding on the left side was different for me! Round-abouts were fun too; we don't really have those here.

Overall though, a good time!
