thoughts on trailer for yard debris
I want a trailer for the numerous trips I make to the yard debris drop site in my neighborhood. Thinking along the lines of a low bed with a ramp that I can push a wheeled container onto. The container can get kinda heavey. I am concerned about stability and strength with that much load- there is a downhill while loaded. Another idea I had was adapting a golf bag hand cart and allowing the container to sit at angle. I would like to hear if someone has done something similar and how it worked out.

I use a Carry-Freedom Yframe large (20"). I strap a plastic bin to the flatbed and fill that with stuff. I have carried bricks, topsoil, building waste. There is a limit to how much you can carry in a brakeless trailer and one binload is my limit. The bin/flatbed IS my wheeled container.
For large loads, I can strap directly to the flatbed. I use a variety of hacks to keep long things at the correct angle to prevent them striking bike or ground. |
if the route is flat, bikes at work trailers Bike Trailers | Bikes At Work are modular and capable of hauling a lot .
2 meters/ 6 feet long , and stacked as high as you dare.. the braking a heavy load down hills with just the bike's brakes is an issue to consider.. putting the debris in a tarp and rolling/folding that into a package would make dumping it like shaking out a blanket. Building a set of trailer brakes particularly with single sided wheels, does complicate things , but you can look to tadpole recumbent trikes for how that is accomplished with their front wheels . [I just mulch with a weed-whacker and leave the stuff where it's cut.] |

I started purchasing parts to build my yard debris trailer but can't say when I'll finish it. Today a fit of desperation overcame me and a lashed a hand truck to my saddle. Off to the drop box I went- slowly but without incident. It's amazing what you can do with materials on hand and very little common sense. ;) Bike is an early 90s Bridgestone MB-4.
