Front Axle (Skewer) Rack
 

I have a HED 3 front wheel with a QR skewer. I want to add an Origin8 Classique Front Rack. I'll need a an extended skewer to add space where the rack will mount which is fine but how are the skewers for supporting the additional weight? I've looked into converting the QR skewer all together to a bolt on but that'd be whole thing that I'm not sure I'd want to do. Not looking to carry a house on the rack or anything. Just my work stuff. Thanks.

Skewers are not designed for the kind of sheer loads supporting a rack would impose. If you look at the typical wheel and fork arrangement, you'll see that the axle supports the load, and the skewer only provides the necessary clamping force.

That's not to say that you cannot mount your rack this way. It depends on the loads you plan to carry, and how much support may be had from friction between the rack leg and the dropout.

Old Man Mountain makes such a rack.. I have had touring riders, successfully, complete tours across the USA using those..

they have you substitute the 10cm front QR skewer, with a rear 13.5cm for its added length..

the QR when tight is in tension , not much in shear.. the weight also using the shoulder of the lawyer's lips in the fork tip.


but As Typical , in this county has a lot of MTB riders. rural and mountainous..

they damage rims, and get new wheels , and the hubs and the QR skewers are piling up,

so you can get an extra rear skewer used, for cheap, and have it as a backup..

Yes , You could Fabricate (or hire it done), new tips since they are adjustable separate pieces,

and make it a 9mm hole, rather than 5, and replace the QR axle with a longer one that is solid and fixed with a Nut.

Its not that difficult to do..

if I could chime in here, I have the Minoura FPR-3000 that mounts to the fork via the skewer and brackets going to the canti braze-ons

They recommend a max load of 10 kgs - having ridden several hundred miles with loaded panniers, there have been no issues with this

OK, but, you got a pannier rack instead. * that's not the OP's topic. I looked it up , 3rd post picture is what they asked about..

*old man mountain is a pannier rack too, though it has a top platform, just not as wide ..

You can buy replacement skewers for Old Man Mountain over here. You can find there other hardware for mounting on skewers that can be helpful. I ride with a front OMM rack for many years, and there is a whole infrastructure attached to that rack, including a top mounted basket that carries at times different loads. All is good.
