My neighbour routinely takes her tiny dog for 'excercise' in the front basket of her bike. The dog definitely enjoys the ride.

....if they weren't known for freaking out at being around humans and dying, i would have loved to have a Tarsier as a pet....world's smallest primate....those things are sooo cool.

That's not bad. If you attached the body harness at the bottom to the bottom of the mess bag it might be even better. But, I understand putting a hole in the mess bag might be a drawback. He might want to jump out after another animal.

I use a seat belt (body) harness here fastened at the bottom under his chest. I put a swivel on it so he can turn around. He can't get out but can stand, sit, and lie down.

Freaky bug-eyed things! Straying even further offtopic, this isn't exactly a "small animal," but it's one I've been wanting to see in person since my brother told me about them. Apparently a serval cat can make for a very interesting pet, assuming you're allowed to own one where you live...

Saw someone walking one (serval cat) on the local bike path.

Just wear your lil' dog in place of your helmet.

No thanks. Being a city boy I get made fun of my peers a lot because I have a reasonable fear of any animal that could if it chose to. Case in point:

My partner and I were chasing two horses down the highway one night that had gotten loose somehow. Kinda of a catch 22 because we had to have our overhead lights on to warn traffic of two extremely large mammals in the roadway, but of course our overhead lights scared the horses so they kept running, crap. So anyway, somehow, we managed to corner them in a field, and know I think, "Great, We caught them, but WTF do I do now with a 1000# animal I have no idea how to handle?" Fortunately, my partner was an old farm boy from up North and grabbed some rope to tie them up with while I found the owner.

We bought a used Burley Tot trailer, and we've been taking our dog in it. We're trying to get her accustomed to it, so she can go on a tour with my wife and I this summer.
