Hampton/Newport News, Virginia

While running errands I always take the time to stop and shoot a few photos.....

Ran into one of the local morning talk shows.....


Relatively close to the Hampton Coliseum.....


It's amazing what you can do when you have a cool looking bike AND
you aren't afraid to talk to people.....

I made the front one using 1/8" x 1" stock and blades from an old fork, all bolted together. The rear one was already built and I adapted (bent/drilled) it and added the wood platform.

My current setup. I hope to have the FG gone in the next week or two, then order a Trek Transport. Depending on how long it takes to come in determines when this bike goes up for sale...

Smile The Salt Barge

Here's what I have so far...26" Pro Class brand (purple & blue) Outrider women's MTB frame for the front and a NEXT rear triangle (silver) from a 24" NEXT pink girls MTB. Frame supports and rear tire from a boys 24" blue Huffy mtb.
I had a dickens of a time getting that NEXT apart. BOTH sides of the fake three-piece crank had to be hacksawed off.
The NEXT was a CL find, but it was trashed, brakes broken, seat cover slashed and partially cut off, and even the tires has some kind of asphalt or aggregate stuck to them. I just bought it for the triangle and the wheels. The tires will be going on the trike build for my daughter. You can see the rear of the trike in the background.
Now I need to finish the supports and get them welded. Then add all of the other parts. So far, the Huffy & Pro Class were free. The NEXT was $20 bucks, hardware $15, $7 for a new shifter cable, and $20 for the tubing cutter from Lowes, an excellent tool! I want to keep the entire build under $100, if possible. A local bike shop has an olive-brown Trek Transport in their showroom. They want $1250 for it.

Why are you laughing at $1250.00 for a Transport?? Is it damaged?? Abused?? The MSRP for a brand new one on the trek page is $1389.99.....

I am laughing because I just might be able to scrounge together a vehicle that will work for my purposes and spending less than an a tenth of the $1250 for a NEW cargo bike. No offense meant to Trek or their fans...
I could not build a car or motorcycle for a tenth of the cost of a new one.

Making a Steamroller work for a living.

The frame and fork of the Steamroller isn't conducive to adding racks, so to add carrying capacity I added a Revelate Tangle bag, which carries U-lock or chain and padlock, small tools, etc. And the seatpost has clamps for both a Carradice Tour and a Burley Travoy.

Other goodies include Nitto Moustache bars, Michelin Krylion 25mm tires (~27mm actual), Selle SMP saddle, and SwissStops on the front brake. Gearing is 50:19 for 69 gear inches.

I forget if i posted my bike, I replaced my home made one with this radish, I paid 500$ for it new because there was a ding, This things the biggest lemon i've ever bought it's always breaking lol works good when not broken though. I kinda miss my home made one. this is the as i bought it picture, it's had alot of changes since the pic, here it is for now though.

Wink Finally!!!

Been wanting one for several years (long story,but due to former occupation as well as where I lived previously,it would have done me no good to have before now). My ol Trek and previously owned (but never assembled) Xtracycle with a new Hoodie (the Flightdeck that came with when I horse-traded my way into it is mounted under the Hoodie). I'm gunna go for a longer ride when the wife gets in from work tonight,and I only have a couple laps around the block-test ride in so far,but I LOVE it! Just needs a bit of rise and stretch in the cockpit,maybe a better fork (rigid or 80mm)

How many hours do you think you'll need to put in to get a bike that will match the Transport's capability -- in all areas ? It's level of finish ?

I'm not knocking the DIY approach, in fact it very much appeals to me, but it really is an apples and oranges kind of thing.

Yeah, even the nicer home made cargo bikes are very functional and do the job just fine, but they're not as nice as factory-built (and designed) long bikes. Nothing wrong with that, it can be more fun, rewarding and satisfying to have your own custom bike, than just going down and parting with enough cash to get a complete bike. Having checked out and ridden brand new Trek Transport and Yuba Mundo bikes, i can tell you they ride nicer than my parts bin special, but i have a lot of pride in my custom bike too!

HSean, What kind of troubles with the Radish? I'm a bit surprised to hear that.

My '88 Kuwahara Shasta... swapped in a different wheel set with a 7 speed megarange in case things get really ugly and I needed a 34 tooth cog in the back.

I think my home built extrabike stands up just fine... prefer to haul really big loads in the trailer but for the past 4 years my home built bike has hauled a great deal of stuff and never caused me a second of grief..

front rack made from recycled materials.
the welded square tubing was from a discarded computer desk. the struts are metal tubes from an old ironing board. Hose clamp connects the two parts.

I have the '07 model. I like that on this redesign they built in a bottle holder. Still like my C bars better though. Also make sure that your rear axle housing ins completely square. If it isn't you'll routinely snap the rear axle.
