Actually It is a reality in a big city. I wear one here too. I have even seen motorcyclists wear them. Lets face it if you are wearing those glow in the dark vests, you will be seen by drivers much better and have less chance of being hit. I do agree though it is sad we have to wear them but it is an unfortunate reality of city cycling.

Wot? I wear the same kind of thing while riding a bicycle all the time. It's a good practical way to dress, - especially if the weather is a wee bit on the cool side. Hey, and safety vests rule. Around here they get worn by operators of heavy machinery and boy does your street cred go up when you walk into the supermarket wearing one if you're a woman

I wear one when riding on the main roads in particular. If I am just tooling around the neighborhood at slow speeds...probably not. My company pays for mine We get the full vest ANSI Class 1 in our choice of lime green or orange...mine is orange with lime green under the reflective stripes Yah gotta be blind to miss mine. I have worn safety vests since the 70's.

Inasmuch as most motorists say, after having hit a bicycle, "But officer, I didn't see him!", anything we can do to make ourselves more visible, and hence that statement less believable, is good.

I, myself have a vest like that studded with LEDs which I wear when riding at night.

Exactly! Anyone that thinks a safety vest is overkill should see my old kiddie trailer, dubbed the Safety Wagon by my husband. I had a full sized slow moving vehicle triangle, two flags, reflective tape on all the framework and blinking LED taillights at all four corners.

My hi-vis vest is downright subtle by comparison.

Safety is particularly important with kids. With respect to helmets, for example, adults can do as they like and I would never say anything to an adult who prefers to ride without one (although I think it foolish, as I prefer to keep my brain inside my skull, but that's just me.) But when I see parents allowing their kids to ride without them, it makes my blood boil. I haven't kids of my own, but if I did I wouldn't want their little skulls bouncing on the pavement without some sort of protection.
