Cool video Thanks! Another BD is coming: I've just ordered a 2011 frameset today. Exciting! What a relief. I was going nuts trying to decide between BD, Yuba Mundo or the Xtracycle extension. Then Sun announced an Xtracycle compatible longtail. But this is it. No more confusion. But it'll take some time. Not all Xtracycle accessories are available yet and I want the tail kit and wideloaders painted black too. Should I look for someone to powedercoat them or there is something really tough I can paint them with myself?

If you can swing the cost, go for the powdercoating. If not, here's a pretty solid rattle can solution: use some sort of metal prep/wash on the parts. MEK from your hardware store is fantastic, but your nuts will fall off if you're not wearing a professional mask. After the prep, handle 'em with rubber/latex gloves after that (the parts, not your nuts). Then spray parts with Bulldog Adhesive promoter (rattle can). You only need to wait about 10 minutes before grabbing the final rattle can of color— automotive paint, etc. Couple/three light, even coats. I used that exact routine on my Tacoma's rims and it lasted for 2 years with hardly any paint coming off.

Ha ha ha! Thanks It's hard to find someone in NYC who does small powdercoating jobs. It doesn't need to be pretty, just needs to be tough so the paint won't come off easily. I saved your instructions with all the safety details, I'll see if I can get the stuff and probably try to do this myself

Waaah! Surly pushed the complete build Big Dummy back another week (or two). I was hoping mine would be waiting for me when I returned from a trip yesterday. Sigh... Patience is a virtue.

Me frame arrived last week, but I'm still a while away from starting the build
I ordered some parts today. My wheels should be ready in a week or two. I also have a touring bike, I'm trying to sell which prevents me from starting working on the BD, because if I don't sell it I will be able to reuse lots of parts from that bike: the whole drivetrain basically (9/3 Shimano Deore). Yeah, I'm going with a standard derailleurs, I can't justify the expense of a Rohlof hub at this time, maybe an upgrade for the next year.
I'll be getting the Xtracycle accessories once I know what's up with the touring bike. I want the racks and wideloaders painted black, so that will delay the complete built as well. I'm getting the P-racks, by the way, just to have the extra option to carry panniers if I want to and the black flightdeck.
I'm thinking about getting the Yuba bags for it, rather than the freeloaders.
Still debating on the tires, minimum 2.0, probably some flavor of Schwalbe Marathons.
Also, debating whether I need a front rack. On my commuter bike I use front panniers to carry batteries for my headlights and an oversized bottle for my AirZound. I might want to do the same for the BD.
I'm still undecided about the handlebar. If the touring bike doesn't sell, I may try the touring bar on the BD otherwise, most likely a straight bar.
***
A couple of questions:
What's the best stuff to rustproof the inside of the frame?
Considering the length of the chain does it make sense to install some kind of device to prevent excessive slapping? Since the chain angle and position changes slightly with standard derailleurs I imagine some kind of roller that would hold the chain up but allow side to side movement. DO I even need to worry about this?

Heaven!
Picked her up on Friday night and I've been tooling around town nonstop since. So. Much. Fun!
I'm completely amazed by how fast errands around town have become - you never realize how much time you spend hunting for parking spots in your car till you zip into town on a bike. My wife has been "the tailgunner" for 90% of the riding, and the bike handles beautifully with a passenger. I'm used to riding a tandem, and the feeling of dead weight you get when the stoker stops pedaling. Nothing like that at all on the Big Dummy!
As you may notice in the photo, I scored a used Rolling Jackass Centerstand at Aaron's Bicycle Repair in Seattle on a business trip last week (half price - whoo!), and it totally rules.
Looking forward to upgrades (of course). I desperately need to get a more comfortable saddle, and I'm putting aside a piggy bank for a Rholloff. Need to tape the handlebar, would like some better grips, need some tiedowns, etc.. etc... the list goes on and on
Thanks again for this awesome thread - it was an invaluable resource!
PS: I've named the bike "The Pequod"

Lee, I think it's a "loop bar" from Jeff Jones, but I could be wrong... closest thing I could find:

Yes, that's the Jones bar. Still love it on mine. And I believe the price has dropped and new versions are available. Get on the waiting list!
* STRANGE NEWS *
I'm selling the beloved Goat. Hard to do, since guys like Vik, Brent, and myself were among the very first to build Dummies and share the love. But I need to move some goods ($), and need to simplify. So I'm selling all my bikes in order to build just one, and the ol' Goat is part of that sale.
Would love to hand off the frame/fork locally in Central Ohio. Have zero desire to pack that monster, let alone hear someone choking on the shipping price.
I think the SON28 + Rohlhoff wheelset is spoken for. I think... Greg?
Have other stuff for sale, too: the Surly Mr. Whirly crankset (w/ single 44T Salsa chainring), the new FlightDeck, Thomson seatpost, etc.

Wow man! You, Vik and others were the inspiration for us - seriously - and you had so much fun on the Goat! The Goat is a legend! Can you keep it as THE only bike? You can have few sets of wheels for it too? Won't you regret it?!
I mean... It's just a bike, you can always build another one later, but it's quite unexpected knowing how much you enjoyed this bike.

BTW, my BD frame is still in a box. I've listed my touring bike on eBay for the third time, dropped the price. The auction ends tomorrow at noon. The outcome will decide what's next. If it sells I'll use the money to buy more parts.
I've already ordered some parts and accessories that I'd need anyway. If it doesn't sell then it'll become a donor. I really wanted to sell it whole since I've put a lot heart into that build and have some good memories associated with it. It's a very complete and purposeful bike, so it would be nice to know that it'll continue his life as a touring rig and see some more road rather than end up in parts bins, but heck, you do what you gotta do. The entire drivetrain will fit the BD, plus headset, stem, bottle cages. The remaining parts will go back on eBay.
I've been also ruminating over the brakes. Vik likes hydros on his BD, but they kind of turn me off due to their extra complexity over mechanical. The issue of cable housing compression is real though, with the rear brake mainly, and it gets worse as the cables get longer. On a standard bike is not that bad but I imagine on a BD it's worse, depending on one's tolerance for lever "mushiness". As I mentioned on Vik's blog I feel weird about having tubes with liquid on my bike, feels car-like The touring bike has 2009 BB7s so I will be reusing them if the bike doesn't sell. I might try the Nokon compressionless cables and the new, cleansweep Avid rotors, larger size: 185mm.
I still need Xtracycle racks and stuff. If they're compatible with 2011 frame I would like to score some from the Goat (PM sent!)
Anyway, the idea is that as of tomorrow afternoon I will get going with the build: I will order all parts in the next couple of days, and the build will start next weekend hopefully. I'm getting anxious.
I can't get that JP Weigles frame protector anywhere though.

It does suck to sell it, no doubt about it...especially given the history—that bike was the first one I had built and owned after a significant 'wake up call' in my life. And to anyone reading this and thinking I'm being sentimental, get yourself a Big Dummy and tell me it doesn't put a smile on your face every time you ride it.
But as you said, it's just a bike. And it can be rebuilt, someday.
So, $450 and a local pickup in Central Ohio will score someone:
- 1 very well cared for 18" fork/frame (+ an extra Dummy fork)
- matching black V-racks (powder coated same Jet Black as the frame/fork)
- WideLoaders (not color matched)
For $575 I'll leave the Mr. Whirly crankset on there, too.

I replied to your PM, and yes, I'm interested in the metal housing too. Does it come with the cable and whatever hardware I might need? Please include the ferulles and what not, thanks

You used the Magic Wrap on the sideloaders, right? I never heard of this stuff until I saw it in your Flickr photos. Gotta get some of that stuff!

Can't find JP Weigle's anywhere. But there are lots of products under "rust inhibitor spray" and "engine fogging spray". Perhaps I'll just try some Rust-Oleum spray. There is also something called CRC Corrosion Inhibitor and bunch of other. Dang, I was at the Home Depot, should have checked.
