Utility bike touring

I finally got my summer tour written up. While I thought about putting this on the touring section, I did take my CETMA cargo bike. The writeup is at https://www.spotadventures.com/trip/view?trip_id=272595. Flash is required for pictures and map

Awesome! Truely awesome! To think you tried that with a family of four and a huge cargo bike. Congrats!

My flagship has been and is still a 1984 Takara 490 Challenge. In 84, it was the second most expensive Grand Touring bike that Takara made that year. It is a rather long wheelbase, solid, stable. I have put 85 pounds on it while towing a 100 pound trailer. This being said, it is getting hard to find parts for it. I started looking for a replacement. I did NOT know that Surly was making a Grand Touring bike. Grethor, I thought that Grand Touring bikes were all but extinct due to the MTB. I chose to buy a Big Dummy AS my new Grand Touring rig. We have had only 4 months together. I will be outfitting it for LDx grand touring. I ride IFR. So far, it has become the "grocery getter" and has been used for camping a few times in place of my flagship. Will I tour on it? This depends upon my load requirements. If 85 pounds will get me by, I'll take my Challenge. If I really need to haul more, the BD is my new Grand Touring bike reqardless of its original mission profile. When the Challenge becomes technically, economically obsolete, the BD will be my Grand Touring Rig and flagship.

Wonderful report and looks like the trip you will always remember. I do have one comment, could you slow the slideshow down? I had trouble reading some of the captions it moved so quick, I finally gave up and just enjoyed the pictures.

I wish I could slow the slideshow down. There are some viewer controls on there for pausing and manually advancing the pictures but the site seems to just do it's own thing. I really like the spot adventure site for creating these types of writeups, but it has some definite user interface issues and requires flash so cannot be viewed by a lot of folks.
