Trailer bike conversion?

I really want an xtracycle, but do not have the room to keep a long bike, nor the funds to buy/ build one. However I saw a cheap tag along bike extension built for children, the kind that clamps onto an existing bike. Has anyone ever explored taking one of these and using it as the basis for a trailer etc?

Just a thought.
