new kiddie trailer!

I got a Burley trailer yesterday off craigslist for $40! This looks like it sold for over $400 new. It's in excellent shape. It has QR wheels, and it folds. The woman was apologetic for not remembering if it works. It even has high-end tires! She said if it's missing anything, I should call her.

A couple of months ago, I bought another kiddie trailer, so I'll either sell that one (since I like the Burley better) or I'll see if I can do something clever and combine the two to make it a more suitable cargo trailer, which is what I really want.

So patience has paid off. I was waiting like a sitting alligator.

Oh, one creepy thing (to my daughter) is that she came with me, and the woman selling the trailer turned to my daughter and asked her how old "our" kids are. She said, "I'm his kid!" My daughter turns 18 this week. The woman said, "You're not going to ride in that!" Uh, no.

Congrats on your new purchase! I love my converted kid's trailer. It's perfect for hauling my Havanese, Pepper, around, and since it's rated to 100 lbs I can even pick up a few groceries when we're out and about.

P.S. If it'll make her feel any better, tell your daughter that the lady was probably being polite by assuming you two were husband/wife instead of father/daughter. I had someone assume my son and I were a couple, and that is just WRONG in my opinion. My son was 25 and I was...well, old enough to be his mother.

Is it converted physically or just converted in purpose? I'd love to take a dog or two, but my dogs are greyhounds, and they're terribly tall, especially one of them. Also, because of their physiques, sitting is out of the question for the larger one and not great for the smaller one. The larger one is just not nimble enough to take the sitting position. He can only stand or lie down.

The child seats were removed and a thin, plywood floor put down, resting on the framework, for added support. We put the bottom half of a plastic Vari-kennel down as the interior and all the stuff we load up with goes into that. There's a photo on this thread:

The cover is removable, so when my DH wanted to take his Border Collie/mix for a ride, he just took the cover off. If I can find a pic I'll share it with you.

Oops, I just replied to that thread:

Yeah, that's a small dog. I think might be too tall to stand under the tube that goes over the top of the trailer.

Plus I'd need to use something as a seatbelt to prevent them from jumping out.

Here we go. This is DH (dzrthauler) with his 60-lb BC/mix, Lucky. Lucky is the size of a golden retriever (we think that's what he's mixed with). DH ended up using a short training lead attached to the back cross-post of the frame to keep Lucky from jumping out. It worked quite well, and the trailer had no problem handling Lucky's size/weight.

Lucky is sitting, right? Red is not just tall, but the distance between his front legs and hind legs is long. He's like a bus. But I will try it. First, I'll try it with Waffle, who is much smaller. Plus, she likes rides better. She always wants to go for a ride in the car.

If it helps, the inside of my Bell trailer is 31" long, which makes for a comfy ride for Lucky but would not fit our larger goldens or the Akita.

DH now uses his flatbed with the SmartBin to take Lucky along when we both tow the dogs. Lucky actually rides better in the SmartBin. I think it's because the sides are high enough that he has no intention of trying to jump out while moving...or even when we're stopped. He waits for "dad" to help him out. The bin is large enough (43 or 45" long) that Lucky will stand comfortably for most of the ride. When he relaxes he will sit, but that's only if he's got nothing to stare at, which is rarely.

Either way your Burley will be a fun cargo hauler, I'm sure!
