Xtracycle - use modified standard child seat?

Can't find anything in the archives.

I'm building an xtracycle and my kid will need to be in a child seat for another 6 months or so. I don't want to buy the $250 peapod. Has anyone tried modifying a standard child seat to fit? I can get something functional for $30.

I'm thinking to bolt it directly to the snap deck. But I'm worried about the width between the legs on the child seat or other clearance issues. Anyone tried this?

A young couple in Colorado who are car-free and have two small children built their own child seat decks for their original longtail (a Big Dummy) and now use it on their Yuba Mundo. They have gotten very creative and even have created a insulated "yurt" cover for these seats to use during winter. You might check out their blog, even though they haven't updated it in a couple of months. You could leave them a question in one of the comments section asking them for some advice. Here are two photos from their site showing their child seats mounted on the deck--there are lots more in their blog. Good luck

IMO the standard snapdeck would not be safe. The Eco Deck uses a different set of mounting clips to secure to the V loaders which are more secure. They are aluminum and do not allow the deck to unclip from the V loaders by just pulling up. The Eco Deck also has a number of predrilled holes for mounting things to it.

I would also install two full sets (4) of Whatchamacollars on the V racks to lock them into the Xtracycle frame. When it comes to carrying a kid better safe than sorry.
