Erde/Wilstow trailers
 

Hey guys. Thismorning I took delivery of two of these:

Now, it's against my general policy of DIY, but I needed a decent, large two-wheeled trailer within a few weeks and realistically I wouldn't ever have got one made in time, as anyone who followed my single-wheel build thread can attest to :twitchy:

I paid £72.50 for each of them, including delivery. They're made by a fairly local engineering firm who apparently have a solid reputation in trailers for motor vehicles. I paid on Thursday evening and they arrived on Tuesday morning.

They have the usual complete-disassembly ability, and fold down flat. They're rated to carry 100kg, and I can believe it, they feel extremely solid. However, with a massive unladen weight of 18kg/40lbs, that might be a bit over the top. I'm going to gauge the thickness of the solid-steel base, calculate the weight of it, and if it's worth it then I might heavily perforate it to take away some of the weight.

I'm going to redesign the fabric covers, put some logos on it, and so on.

I'll get some "real life" pics of it soon, and hopefully take it out on the road a bit later.

I have one of those, I took off the front and back panels and mounted a seat on it. My wife has MS, she isn't able to ride but I take her with me for short cruises and beach rides. I put a kickstand on the front to add stablity getting on and off. I also put a pair of wheels on the back kind of like wheelie bars. It makes it more stable while riding and also since it does not fit through the door where I store it I can take the wheels off and roll it around on the little wheels I put on the back. I went the opposite direction that you did, I added lots of weight. Also changed the tires since I use it just for the road I put a pair of whitewall slicks to match the bike I pull it with. I've used it about a dozen times, real happy how it worked out.

That trailer bears a strong resemblace to the Croozer cargo trailer. Even the hitching mechanism is very similar.

Dan Burkhart - they're probably not the same thing, the croozer has a plastic base, for example (30kg max load).
I don't know if Erde actually made that trailer themselves or just buy them in from elsewhere, so they may well share identical components.

According to my calculations, the steel bed on these trailers weighs about 3.5kg or almost 8lbs. It might really be worth chopping them up a bit...

Those "FEHA Design" brand trailers only weigh 7.5kg! wow, half what these weigh even with the steel bed removed.
I wonder where all the weight is. Maybe it's just steel vs. aluminium.
