'Quick release' crate for rear rack?
 

Hi all.

I'm looking to use my bicycle to run errands as well as for commuting, and I'm thinking of means of increasing the carrying capacity. At the moment I have a rear rack, to which I attach my bag for university with a bungee.

I do have an old wooden schweppes lemonade crate which I think would look pretty good on the bike and should be sturdy enough. What are my options for installing the crate to the rack? I know I could just bolt it in place, but I'd like to be able to remove it when not using it.

Zip ties, velco straps with some sort of lugs to keep the box from sliding around. Bolts with wing nuts would work too, but not be a quick, quick release.

I though about getting that, I have a compatible rack, but this crate weighs 4 pounds empty!

I attached a cheap crate with zip ties and it was very stable, didn't slide, or anything, you just need lots of zip ties on all sides. I took it off though, it made the bike very sensitive to winds and I didn't really like the top-heavy feel. Then I got a Big Dummy.

These crates are alright providing the saddle is high enough so that it snaps in properly. I had to return one because it did not fit under my Brooks saddle.

I'd probably do it like this:

Use one of these racks (which is a very nice rack, BTW; I already have one). Bolt this adapter to the bottom of your crate. If you want to be really sure the crate itself can't walk away, add this lock widget.

There are also other containers that work with the SnapIt attachment scheme on the AddIt rack.
