Big Dummy!

A friend of mine is selling his Big Dummy, and I'm test-riding it for a week. It's a tad too large for me, but I think a shorter stem will fix that issue.

I've been riding it since Friday and I'm already in love with it.

Since I'm going car-free (and already living that way) I can justify a cargo bike. I'm in a little bit of a pickle because I don't have the money for the BD. I'm hoping he'll let me make payments on it... even if I have to give the bike back for a while. :twitchy:

Here's the bike hauling 35lbs of dog food on one side, and 20lbs of cat litter on the other.

I wish I could get one of those... I don't care how "trendy" they are, I still want one.

Trendy or not, it's now mine. He threw in the kickback kickstand and the wideloaders too. I won't leave the wideloaders on it. It barely fits through my door that way.

Sweet!

Congrats, and welcome to the BD club. I'm sure you're gonna love it.

You will not regret it. I hardly ever ride my LHT since getting the BD. It's just plain fun to ride.

My biggest lust bike is a Moonlander, but I have absolutely no justification for it in the DC area. After that I want a Big Dummy or a Yuba Mundo. I lean towards the Yuba because both my wife, 5'4", and me, 6'4", could ride it. Does anyone have experience with both bikes? I know the Yuba is much cheaper, but I do have some worry about the one size fits all idea.

Oldsport,

Re: Surly Big Dummy and Yuba Mundo

I have both, a Big Dummy and Mundo... for a shared cargo bike, the Mundo is my first choice. As my personal bike and primary transportation, the Big Dummy is the only choice. I like the Mundo for heavier loads (70 pounds plus) and Big Dummy for lighter loads. Both bikes are used for recreational riding, the Big Dummy is my ride. (Big Dummy is my touring bike.) Wife is 5'8" and I'm 6'0" so sharing the Mundo is easy, the upright riding position of Mundo also helps with one-size-fits-all.

Either bike is a good choice... but the Big Dummy provides that something-special feel for me. (Mundo is still a fun ride.)

Phil,

Thank you, that is helpful information. You have a unique perspective owning both bikes. I currently ride a Bruce Gordon BLT Taiwanese model on my 38 mile rt commute. I absolutely love this bike, but I have been thinking about a bike that my wife could carry the kid and groceries on. Due to the want to save money we may try and go car free next summer. I ride year round, but I cannot ask my wife to start riding (she is a riding beginner) in the winter.
