QR Basket for Front Rack
 

Edit: No replies here, so I'm going task this over on the commuting forum.

I'm pretty sure this is a dumb question, but neither a Google nor a forum search yielded a clear answer, so I'm asking here. Can I put a quick release basket made for a rear rack on a front rack?

Here's the backstory in case it helps: After riding home from the grocery store with a heavy load on back left me feeling not quite in control of my bike, I decided I'd like to put a rack on the front of my bike to better balance the load. What I'd like to do is add a rack and use it with a quick release basket so that I don't have to keep the basket on all the time. I don't want a basket that attaches to my handlebars because I want the basket down a little lower than that. I'm looking at baskets designed for the rear because I can't seem to find a QR front basket that doesn't attach to the handlebars.

I should also add that I'm probably not going to add this to my current bike (a Giant hybrid). I have a new one on the way, so I'll wait to put the rack and basket on the new bike. I should have it in about three weeks. The new bike is a Dutch-style Oma.

With a porteur rack you can always just bungee a milk crate/box/plastic tub or whatever. That's what I do.

Do the bungees hold the crate securely enough that I could bring groceries home in it? If so, that's a much simpler solution!

Bungies work as well as you use them. If you draw them tight, they can hold a lot. It takes some trouble, though.

more convenient is to have a permanently minuted basket and toss a bag in.

reusable Zip ties work for Me, though the single use work fine ..

and if you can open up the pawl with a small screwdriver , they can be reused too ..


I got one of Paul Comp's Flatbed front porteur racks.. it has a rail around it to retain stuff..
and lots of stuff fits .. even a 40cm Pizza Pan.

It's hard to attach a quick release basket to a porteur-style rack, because most of the quick release baskets use spring-loaded "clips" that don't expand wide enough to attach the wide porteur rack. While the Public front rack isn't a porteur, it is fairly long, which is beneficial in that it can fit standard panniers and it's got a fairly large surface area to attach things to the top, even without the basket.
