Regards from the "navel of the Earth"
I am so glad this forum exists. I was beginning to feel lonely. I am a busy father of three and I commute to work by bicycle most days of the week. I live in Queens, one of the boroughs of the City of New York, and I bike to Lower Manhattan. I am all about vehicular cycling. The city has made great efforts to put in bike lanes, but I must admit, I really don't care for them. Sometimes they're fine, but sometimes I think are downright dangerous. I prefer to share the road with cars and do with considerable success on roads where there are no bike lanes. Most of the bike lanes, btw, are just two solid white lines on the right side of the road, which is where i would be riding most of the time anyway. However, about 20-30% of the time it doesn't work for me--a street cyclist needs flexibility. I plan to post on this subject on my blog in the next few days.

I also see that there are cyclists in non-urban areas that have it harder because there may be no shoulder to utilize. NYC streets often have a little extra space on the right because drivers need to get out their cars once parked. This is another reason why being confined to the right isn't so great. My understanding, I could be wrong, is that the solid double line constitutes a legal confinement and while there may be extenuating circumstances, they may be difficult to prove in court in the event of an accident.

I'm new here folks and open to good arguments, so go easy.
