Pfffffffft....... Nothing new there. It's come up on many an occasion, just like ignorant people who think bicycles should have a number plat and valid insurance. The long and short of it is, is that iw will never happen. ESPECIALLY in WA State which is very bike friendly.

There is a general consensus that the gas tax is an awkward and inefficient way to finance roadway capital costs. It should be eliminated and replaced with an assortment if flat fees and variable costs which depend upon everything from mileage to overall roadway profile (size, weight, width, length, etc.). Makes sense to me: road hogs pay more. But there ARE fixed costs that everyone on the road should have to pony up for.

A little insanity here.
I think they need to tax the Senators more for the contributions to global warming from all the HOT AIR that they spew out.
The food a person eats is part of a carbon cycle and does not add to global warming, although it can take fuel to grow, distribute, and prepare the food.
And, one shouldn't look at the overall food consumption of the bike commuter, but the difference between bike commuting and driving or staying home, and that difference is minimal.
Yes, bikes pay less "road taxes", although their impact on the roads is minimal, yet, they are susceptible to debris that fall off of vehicles, and is thrown out windows.
One point that I make is that bike lanes are good for cars. They like a formalized road shoulder which provide a buffer for cars with or without bikes. And, with bikes on the road, the bike lanes help improve the traffic speed and flow around the bikes, and safety for all road users.
Perhaps we should also incorporate a sneaker tax to help pay for all the very expensive curbs and sidewalks.

Commuter bikes reduce road wear and tear, and ultimately save all taxpayers money. The state should be paying them.

Bike taxes and licensing schemes come up on a regular basis, and are usually soundly defeated. Gas taxes fund less than 10% of US Highway funds. It's about the same for most states.
If they really want to do something useful, they should tax our elected officials for all the excess hot air they generate, contributing to Global Warming.
