Canmore and beyond

Heading out to your part of the world this week with Bike Fridays in tow, and planning a few days of riding, along with hiking, sight-seeing and just being a lazy bum. The plan is four nights in Canmore, four in Radium and three in Golden, and then spouse has a couple of days in Calgary by himself while I work. I might join him for crack-of-dawn rides if I can persuade him to get up for them.

Does anyone have any suggestions of 50-100 km rides we can do based in any of those places, and where we can get maps/route maps for them? Any organized groups that might welcome guests for a day? I saw a book of rides in and around Calgary when I was in Calgary's MEC earlier this year, but the line on a sunny Sunday afternoon was so horrendously long that I gave up and went away. This was probably a mistake.

I'd welcome any advice.

From Canmore, ride into Banff: you can make some great rides out of the Minnewanka loop and Bow Valley Parkway. Throw in some nice climbs on the road up to Norquay and Hwy 93 up to Storm Mt. You will love it. Carry some bear spray (just in case).

Radium, you can do a loop around Lake Windermere, or ride into Kootenay park. Golden is great for mountain biking. When you get to Calgary, you can do what everybody else does - Bragg Creek, Millarville, road to Nepal - good pavement, and the weather is finally starting to resemble summer.

Radium to Golden is 105km. The road is a bit rough, but it's a decent ride anyway. Golden to Lake Louise is 85km. It's an excellent ride. If you can always turn around at Field to make it back to Golden. Pretty much it's great cycling all around the area.

Update: We did Canmore to Banff (bike trail paralleling the TransCanada is almost finished), and then Banff to Lake Louise, with Lake Minnewanka thrown in for good measure on the Canmore to Banff day. Today was round Lake Windermere, and it turns out that our final nights are in Fernie not in Golden after all.

It's fun!
