Ucluelet to Tofino?
 

Has anyone recently ridden the route between Uclueclet and Tofino?

Is it a nice ride or not worth doing?

I've done that in a car, and parts of it on a bike. I wouldn't go out of my way to ride it -- it's a beautiful area, for sure, but that particular road is just sort of flat and straight. It's got a fair amount of traffic, narrow shoulders, and for much of the way there aren't a lot of views -- just a wall of tress on both sides of the road.

When I was in Tofino on vacation I did parts of that just for exercise, but I wouldn't say it was a great cycling experience.

Definitely a great area, though.

There are a few hills on the Ucluelet side of the junction as BengeBoy mentioned, it is kind of straight and flat with trees lining the road. There is a MUP that parallels the road closer to Tofino.

Are you driving there? Because it is out of the way. Though Pacific Rim National Park, situated between Ucluelet and Tofino, is rated in the top 5 for National Parks in Canada. I've camped at Greenpoint a couple of times and it's beyond description.

Compared to the road from Port Alberni to the junction, the stretch of highway you're asking about is rather tame with limited views.

BTW, if you want to really enjoy the beauty of the area, and get some exercise, rent a kayak in Tofino and go kayaking.

We also rented mountain bikes while we were there and puttered around Tofino and the bike paths; one day we also went out a little ways and went for a ride on some logging roads. It was nice, not epic.

I would definitely recommend going to Tofino but it's not a cycling hotspot, IMHO.

Hi, I have ridden to Long Beach from Tofino, but got a flat from running over a big piece of glass so that ended things.
I would ride from Ucluelet to Tofino and hopefully will bring my bike with me to Tofino next time instead of borrowing broken bikes or renting silly cruisers. Both towns have nice bike lanes, but through the park you are on the highway.
The shoulder is quite sufficient and the traffic is very quiet off season(like now) although you get impatient speed demons. It was really beautiful riding along and getting closer and closer to Long Beach, seeing all the trees, the moss, feeling the mist around me.
I would not however bike to Tofino from the ferry in Nanaimo or wherever. I was almost killed in a car accident on that highway crossing the island and it's notorious for horrible accidents. It's dicy and it's nerve wracking as hell for me. It took a long time for me to be able to go to Tofino again. Anyway, with all that can happen on that highway- stretches are killer it is unsafe for cyclists in my opinion.
Trips to Tofino are usually short on time so biking isn't always the best way to go, but I really enjoyed biking around Tofino. But be careful of wild animals too and have good lights at night. I was riding a borrowed mountain bike with no lights on the bike path and a series of scary sounding animals ran right in front of me into the forest. could have been predator chasing prey. Think bears, wolves, coyotes and cougars.

Hi ...another option is to put your bike on the Lady Rose( or the newer one) boat in Port Alberni and catch the ride to Ucluelet... then ride to Tofino and back , in a couple of days catch boat back to Port Alberni...way safer than the road across the middle ohttp://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=183091f the island...its a bit of a death run ....and probably will be for a long time to come as it is very narrow, no shoulders. big trucks, big rvs and crazy locals...

Have they found a new boat yet to replace the Lady Rose? I have taken the Lady Rose, as well as cycled that stretch; and I much prefer the boat ride.
