New Schwalbe Marathon Winter PLUS vs Marathon Winter
 

Schwalbe introduced Marathon Winter PLUS tires for some sizes. They say: "For best possible puncture protection, it now comes with a SmartGuard layer."

So it's a different tire now. Thoughts?

how wide are these? I have a trek commuter that I throw studded tires on for the worst winder weeks but I'd love to throw a set of these on my bianchi frame from the 80s, it's my 'more fun commuter'

it's an early cross bike so I bet I have the tire clearance for a thinner version of these

While I was worried about the additional hassle of fixing flats at winter termps when I started, I found I didn't really get any flats during the winter. I know someone who got a flat once but in general flats seem to be less common in winter riding I suspect because pushing something hard enough against the tire to puncture it happens less when the ground is covered in snow.

Old SMW tires had a nice rolling. Not sure about this new tires. Schwalbe says it's the same.

Smartguard? I've never gotten a flat with the dumb ones so I won't be upgrading!

It displaces tread rubber , casing the same, so I got Blue patches
off center, where the black rubber could not be more than 4mm thick..

The issue is whether you deflate your tires for winter rider to allow more contact of the tire with the ground/ice. If you do deflate your tires to lower air pressure, the Smartguard offers more sidewall protection. It is really a question of what inflation pressure you use for winter/ice riding. For some people. it may not be an issue.

I ran the Schwalbe Winter Marathons all last winter(Montana) and they never let me down. Tried the Schwalbe Winter Marathon PLUS this winter and I have fallen three times. The bike just went out from under me on level ground on ice. I wasn't turning or braking, just riding carefully. It seems to me that whatever changes they made make the tire more unstable on ice. I've switched back to the Schwalbe Winter Marathons, and so far no problems

these ppl say they say they have a 30mm version (maybe not the same exact tire, but can extend your "fun' season?
