Layering this winter

Sometimes you don't have the experience yet.

I once bought a lightweight but insulated cycling jacket (softshell) - Primaloft. With the intention of using it on very cold days. But in practice I never wore this jacket. Baselayer, (fleece or wool) midlayer, and a thin shell was more than adequate even in sub-zero temperatures.

However, this winter brought us a wave of cold polar air with local temperatures down to -10C for days on end. I thought the perfect time to give my jacket another try.

It was a blissful experience!

I wore this jacket with only a long sleeve (mesh) shirt. And wow! I could feel the air flow partially through the pores of the jacket, but strangely enough I never felt cold. In fact, the temperature control was perfect, perfect in the sense that I never sweated profusely.

So how cold does it need to be before you need, or can tolerate, that insulated cycling jacket?
