Winter cycling destinations?
Hopefully this isn't too much of a departure for this sub-forum, but do you have any winter cycling trips planned?
I need a new wheel, so I'll likely be without a bike until after snow falls. I do some winter biking when area trails are clear, but I'm consoling myself by looking up warmer places I could go this winter for a two-three day cycling trip. Any favorites?
I was looking at Arizona and New Mexico, but those are pretty far for me (in Ohio) for a short trip, but maybe at some point. I also hope to bike among the redwoods someday.

sunny southern california along with some central california, southwestern arizona, the las vegas area in southern nevada all beckon.
utah and new mexico are likely doable but much of both states are near or above 5,000 feet which puts you in the cooler but, things
being relative, probably still downright springlike compared to the us midwest, east coast or northeast.
tough to beat southern and central california. remarkable diversity. can still hit some mountain ranges, roll along the beach,
do the foothills boogie or dwell in the desert. some century rides could find you sampling all four scenarios. mornings mostly
near or above freezing except above 6,000 feet (coast generally doesn't dip below the high-40's), afternoon highs in the 60-73
range unless in the mountains above 4,000 feet. occasional temp spike could find you riding the mountains in the 8,000 foot
zone depending on how much snow has or hasn't fallen.
the redwoods and sequoias are awesome but it gets cold rolling thru them since little sunlight slips through and that cold really
lingers heavily in those areas. subtract 12-15 degrees from nearby temp estimates.

Las Vegas. There are always cheap flights and there is all kinds of great riding to do - road and MTB, with good rentals and easy access.'
I go many winters - in January.. I'm not a casino guy and I don't go near the glitz. I stay on the SW edge of town (Sumerlin) and ride out to Red Rock Canyon. If you like MTB, Blue Diamond is supremo.

Many parts of New Mexico are also cold in the winter. Arizona is better than New Mexico in the worst winter months. SoCal is good too - especially San Diego.
