No, but I have been known to let my manager know that I'm taking a short-notice vacation day if the next day's weather looks too sweet to not ride. Luckily, he's rides, too, so he gets it.

And then after I had learned of a safe route to work, I had been cycling to work until I retired. So, I never needed to play any hooky because I was riding everyday, rain or shine.

Where I work, sick days are unofficial vacation days only requiring a doctor's slip if you use more than two consecutive sick days. The company understands people will use them like that and our attendance policy is pretty liberal. I've certainly taken vacation days to ride. I can't recall though if I have called in sick to ride, but I have used sick days for medical visits and then went for a run or ride afterward.
If I haven't called in sick to ride, I don't know how I have avoided it. I have bicycles hanging on three walls of the garage and it is hard to pull out on nice days to drive to work. I need to get a more local job so I can bike to work I guess.

For a while, I had the sweetest job in the world. My boss would tell me he had a project for me to do. And I would say, it's going to be a beautiful day tomorrow. So I'll do it on Thursday. Boy, I miss those days.

My payroll processing firm has re-jiggered things so I no longer get sick leave and vacation, just PTO (paid time off). I think I'm also supposed to play "mother may I" with my supervisor about non-illness PTO. I play nice with the system, by my lights, and let him know when I'm going to take off. Funny thing is none of my last three supervisors ever said anything about filling in the form and getting it signed. Most of the time I let them know ahead of time, but sometimes I just throw a "doctor appointment" in my calendar that lasts a few hours. Or most of the day.

I went back to work full time last summer after 6 years semi-retirement and working part time. Three year contract salary position, no overtime or official comp time. My boss is very understanding if I leave early or take a day off to go riding. I make it up by being available after hours and weekends. He recruited me back to work and knows that cycling is a major part of my life style. Win\win for both of us. I'm working for my former employer and was my bosses supervisor for 25 years before I retired.

In recent memory I’ve used sick days exclusively to be home with a sick child or to ride.
