Best winter bootie?

my Castelli booties were great, but they are on their last legs.
I was looking at the PI Toesties, and thought I'd ask around if there
was anything better. My shoes are amazingly well vented. Which I
love in the summer. Not so much now. Thanks!

I got the Toesties and they are the warmest things I have tried.
Real glad I got them so far. I wore them on a ride in the forties
and the feet were hot and everything else was not.

Try duct tape on your shoes to cover areas that are vented. I did it last week in 0 celcius and noticed a difference. I wore a pair of cheap thermal socks.

i agree. its surprising how much duct tape does for a pair of cycling shoes. booties are a must when its cold and raining though...

Do you put the duct tape on the inside or outside? Also, doesn't it leave gunk all over it when you take it off?

on the outside. i dont remember any gunk being left behind. if youre concerned about ruining your shoes or aesthetics, then by all means use booties. duct tape is just a quick and cheap fix.

ummm aesthetics, but I figured the gunk thing sounded better. :o ;)

Given the original poster was looking to upgrade from Castelli, I think he was looking for something a bit more aesthetic than duct tape.

Having said that, while I try to retain some weak semblance of style throughout the winter, I am willing to try pretty much anything in a pinch rather than have my toes fall off. Plastic subway bags make pretty good oversocks when needed.

Back to the question, it seems that arbitrarily some overboots (booties) are waterproof neoprene and some are not. My garneaus from a few years back were pretty warm below freezing, but the first time it rained I found out that water just soaked through them. The MEC booties I had were thinner and not as warm, but are totally waterproof. Anyone else have insight on what's waterproof and what's not?

velcro closures vs zippered closures... which do you prefer. i bought a crap pair of booties off of ebay last year... they were velcro-- worked well, but i didnt like how they went on--too much pulling. zippered closures look like theyd work great but im concerned about the durablity of zippers that will be constantly run into the snow and salt.
