Yeah, it's that "almost" that prevented me from buying lobster mitts. Now I'm kicking myself. Wife & I were shopping for winter gloves a few weeks ago, since neither of our previous solutions (I have some Performance neoprene gloves, she has some no-name wool gloves w/ LG polypro gloveliners) was acceptable in sub-freezing temps. So she grabs a pair of PI lobster mitts. I looked at them, and just could not for the life of me imagine operating brifters with those. So I bought the Specialized Sub-Zero gloves, which is a layered system consisting of some futuristic hi-tech silver removeable glove liner inserted into what essentially looks like a winter ski glove: fleece-lined windproof shell with "grippy" palm & fingertips, a sweat/snot wipe surface on the back of the thumb, and long gauntlet-type wrist protection with adjustable elastic hem. So Saturday it's 30°F but *really* insanely windy, with gusts up to 50mph. I go out for a solo jaunt, wearing my new Sub-Zero gloves. 30 miles later, my fingertips are just frozen solid. Screw that! Sunday it's only 23°F, but mercifully not windy. Wife & I we go out on a short ride with another couple. Wife is wearing her new PI lobster mitts with the LG polypro gloveliners; I, having learned my lesson the previous day, put on my old Performance neoprene gloves instead of the futuristic hi-tech silver glove liners, then slip on the outer shell from the Sub-Zero. 20 miles later my fingertips are *still* frozen! And my wife is complaining that here hands are too hot!!!!! Oh, and my gloves really aren't that dexterous anyway, so I'll probably just buy the lobster mitts and get used to riding in one gear during really cold days. |

These are the warmest gloves I've ever worn - triple layers. On a cold Nebraska morning - 11 F and -20 windchill, my hands were toasty warm and slightly sweaty after 30 minutes outside. And my hands usually get cold easily.

This is my 4th winter of using this type of glove and I NEVER have cold fingers. https://secure9.nexternal.com/gloves/images/659.jpg |
