I would not put the bike in the shower. I wash it with a bucket of warm water dish soap and a rag.

I wash my bike about once every 2 weeks in winter. I spray some pink bike wash stuff on it, take it over to the wand car wash place, spray it down (making sure I do not spay any water into the hubs or bottom bracket). Walk the bike over to the bike shop that I work at, and use the air hose to get all the water off of my bike and all the cable housing. I find that if I do not get the water out of the housing it is impossible to shirt the next ride.
