Big front tire for winter bicycling

So is that the idea why bicycling in winter
on snow and hard pack roads is a wide front tire?:)

Snowcat tires and rims are double width. They originally started by literally welding two rims together. You can find more about them at http://www.allweatersports.com/ and of course you can read more about that stuff at http://www.enteract.com/~icebike/

I checked the winter site out, very good
I think that a wide front tire and a lot of care is whats needed to bicycle in the winter time.I usually wait till about -5 or under-10 before I go for my run in the winter time.
Usually there are warm days every month:)

You don't really need a wider tyre, lower the pressure and you get a wider purchase. You could get studded tyres too, I've used all of the above, and they all work. I did take a spill two winters ago and was out for two weeks with a bruised tail bone.

How do I stud my own wheels has anyone a simple way to do it?:)

Chip, if you haven't already, check out icebike . They have info on making your own studded tires, but I think the general consensus is to buy them, as the homemade ones don't last long riding on pavement.
I'm buying some for my commuter for this winter. A special wider front wheel seems like an awful lot of trouble - Is it worth it??

Just for giggles.... temporarily running a larger front wheel will let you experience what it is like to have a shallower head and seat tube angle.

Thanks to all that responded I know the answer is probably studded tire for the front.I seem to be managing anyway with just regular tires, has I bicycle in winter whenever the temps are around -5 or warmer
