I am so hacked off at the moment. I created a fender for my commuter, as I was getting a lot of spray. It wasn't much (see pic) a friggin' Mt. Dew bottle cut up and slipped in the frame of my bike. But it is no longer on the bike, someone lifted it! I can't believe anyone would take a cheesy fix it like a cut up two liter bottle. What really gets me, is I didn't know it was gone until I went riding tonight, and my new wind shirt has friggin' road gunk up the back. I went to a lot of effort to make sure the damn thing wouldn't fall out, I even duct taped it to the seat tube, and it worked beautifully.
Guess I'll have to take the next one in with me, like my lights, and computer, if it ain't nailed down it's gone. MF.

Well, #1, they would be idiots to ride out in public. I mean, how many mountain dew fenders are there out there for real? You even have a picture of it. So if you see someone with it, knock them off the bike and take it back.

I take all my accessories off my bike all the time. People look at me crazy and tell me to trust that others will be honest, but that's crazy talk. I barely even trust my own family! If I had my way, they wouldn't even know my name! ;)

Sorry about that, dude. Like the X Files says...

"Trust No One"

Could it have fallen off?

<burp> What fender? Huh? ;)

Jay H 12-16-03 09:35 AM

Just make sure you spit them not in the path of you or somebody else's wheels! :)

Sorry for your loss, maybe you should start collecting spares.
I'm pretty fortunate to have not had any problems, I can leave my bike unlocked and never have to worry about it. I do use a lock but that's just me...

Dude, you are only $1.09 away from having a new set of fenders and a belly full of cola too.

Ive had a cruddy, dirty, worthless but useful piece of kit stolen from my bike. It was a strip of reflective scotchlight, sewn onto a leather strap for use on my ankles. I just wrapped it around the bars for a change, and when I came out of the shop, it was gone.
Some people will steal anything, just because they can.

Indeed! Last night I went for a very chilly walk with my wife and daughter and they went into a store while I stayed outside. I was watching a shady looking character eyeing a delivery bike that was locked to a streetlight pole. This bike was about as low on the food pryamid as a bike can get-dept. store brand, hammered, frame was dented/banged up and had duct & electrical tape all over it and a plastic milk crate bungee corded on its handlebars...

the guy tried to pull on the bike to brake the lock-didn't work.

the guy tried lifting the bike and turning it upside down to twist and snap the chain lock-didn't work.

the guy pulled on the wheels-both front and back-to get them-didn't work.

the guy tried pulling the saddle off-didn't work.

the guy tried pulling the handlebar grips off-didn't work.

the guy tried pulling off the milk crate-didn't work.

finally... the guy bent over and snapped off the only reflector on the bike-a partially broken reflector that was only half attached to a single spoke on the rear wheel-he stood up with it, looked at it carefully, shoved it into his coat pocket and walked away.

  :p

So... You just watched the guy do this? Couldn't you call the cops or tell the store security or yell' "hey, leave the bike alone, your on camera!" or something?

I had a new one happen, yesterday. Went to Targets to get a movie, Jaws, I got it home opened up the DVD, and there was no DVD! Targets does a good job with the secruity seals, one was missing, my thought was some crafty thief pulled the tape off the side, popped it open and nabbed the DVD, then either shrink wrapped it again, or returned it open but still sealed. I don't know. I don't think that way. But I was way hacked off, cause I didn't get to see my movie. It was also one for the holidays, to sit around with friends and family and watch a bunch of movies.

Anybody who would steal a copy of Jaws deserves our sympathy. Buy the video, steal the popcorn.

lol, you ever been to NYC??

1. Call the cops... they would have laughed and/or-if I was extremely lucky and I mean EXTREMELY lucky-they would have shown up 4 hours later.

2. Store security... if there was a guy he would have said, "Ain't my problem." The average security guy in a store in NYC is a junior high dropout with poorly fitting pants, a doo-rag on his head and either talking on his cell to his girlfriend or has earphones on listening to music. i.e. worthless at securing much of anything.

3. Yell something... could have but didn't. He obviously wasn't going to get the bike and the last time I yelled something at a guy(he was walking up Broadway at noon with the sidewalks completely full of people)popping trunks with a crowbar and taking things with no one saying a word to him... I told him to "Stop" and he looked over at me and said, "F*** Off! Just tell me which one is your car and I won't pop it"
Incidently, a few minutes later 2 cops on foot walked by and saw him and said, "Do it on another street" and the guy walked around the corner and started popping trunks there instead.

mtessmer 12-18-03 11:31 AM

Hmmmm... makes me want to move to NYC... not!

Istanbul_Tea 12-18-03 02:44 PM

Actually with the amount of people we have here... NYC is very safe compared to a lot of places.

Sorry, Istanbultea, I didn't notice that you were from NYC. So, why didn't you just shoot him NYC style?

mtessmer 12-19-03 09:08 AM

You know, I'd actually like to come to NYC, I've heard about your five boroughs (sp) ride that you have every May and it sounds like allot of fun. Now I just have to convince my wife.

naisme,
Sounds like things have gotten pretty bad up there in the Twin Cities. This really is the end of civilization as we know it. The end is near! Is there no hero to save us? (despair)

True, which is why anything you want to have with you when you get back on your bike should come inside with you, unless it is bolted.
Let's try and keep it in perspective here, we are talking about half of a plastic soda bottle. I'll bet he passed 10 of them lying on the street riding home.

Unless you don't mind recreating these all of the time i would just spring for some fenders that are meant to be quickly removed. I have this one and love it!
