At what average temp. to remove studs?
This is my first winter using studded tires. I only seem to be slowed down 10% , so am in no hurry to get them off. The normal ( average ) highs for today is 43 F and normal low is 25 F. Would you remove them now, or wait till the normal low gets to 32 F ?

If you are not using an extra set of wheels to swap studs in and out based on local conditions, then perhaps the average last frost day chart (or pick another definition like light freeze). I know I am very tired of being on teh studs as we enter March, yet I rode across a couple ice patches on yesterday's commute.

I've managed not to go down this year... I'd like to keep it that way, I don't want to fall because I took my tires off a few weeks too early and I hit some unexpected ice. I'd rather suffer an other two or three weeks of harder riding then get hurt. Happy riding, André |

Strictly based on road conditions.
I've had mine off for weeks, although it's been around -10 or -15C in the mornings. There just hasn't been any water on the main roads to freeze into anything. The fact that ice is very easy to see on my route this time of year helps too. |
I have a second bike ready, so I plan to keep studs on my winter bike until the inevitable April sleet storm passes.

I wait until the ground is no longer frozen in shaded areas. The most dangerous thing about spring is runoff hitting frozen ground in one shaded spot. Out of nowhere you're on your ass. Locally, my benchmark is West River road North of Franklin Ave.

I take mine off when the snow and ice are pretty much gone. This year it was about a month ago.
