Nose Issues

I love riding in the winter; I hate the constant runny nose. Any solutions?

loose scarf, face mask, full face balaclava...

the key is to keep it warm without impeding air flow out of your mouth.

look up bike or cycling face mask

I would agree. I picked up a hot headz 6-way polar fleece on sale at Ace hardware. One of the ways it can be worn is as a balaclava. I've been amazed how wearing it as a balaclava has reduced the occurrence of a runny nose. It had been years since I've owned a balaclava and I had forgotten how nice it can be to wear one when its cold and very windy.

It's your body's way of protecting your airways - excess mucous production helps to warm and humidify the incoming air before it reaches your lungs. Forget the balaclava; there's nothing sexier then pulling into your driveway after a long, cold ride and showing off your snotcicles to your wife.

I wouldn't get too carried away with that, you can damage or plug your Eustachian tubes...

If there is too much snot to gently wipe away with the terry patch on your glove or gently spit out then perhaps an exorcism is in order?

I mean, it may be your last chance at a normal life.

Notwithstanding the apparent nosedive that the thread seems to have taken, let me weigh in with those who [in often poetic ways] suggest that we should experience the outdoors as the Old Gods gave it to us.

I'll add:

1. Let your wind blow free, and

2. Rejoice in the rain, sleet, and snow.

+1 snot rocketry

However, I do carry hankies on me, one in my back pocket and one in my cycling jacket.

Consider tying a hankie or bandanna to your sleeve so that you don't need to use your fingers to wipe your nose...just an arm swipe while you ride might be enough to keep you going. That might feel weird if you commute in the rain, tho. Guess it depends on how much you care for stopping on your ride just to blow your nose. If you have a front pocket on your handlebars, that would be an ideal place to tuck a hankie, it would always be in reach when you came to a stop sign, say.

Fleece gloves;
Be sure to get the better ones with the windblock layer, else your hands will freeze.
The back of the gloves have lots of nice, soft, absorbent fuzz, and they can be tossed in the laundry when you get home.

I will tie a bandanna around my neck ascot-style. Helps keep the throat warm and can also be pulled up bank-robber style if the face needs more protection.
Nosespray (eg: Afrin) which is pretty addictive but dries things up nicely as long as you keep using it.

Food taste bland lately? Chronic use of intranasal drugs has been associated with anosmia.
