Many, many years ago on a whim I picked up a rubber Grunge Guard for my RD. It's been a trooper in keeping the RD fairly clean with all the winter crap I've put the bike through over the years. They were discontinued long ago but I think they periodically show up on ebay, etc. I keep thinking I should track one down for the FD too.

'Bent? Got good fenders? My commuters use full housing for some and I just use teflon lube. One is just a 1x9 so no front der. Plus it has thumb shifter, no freezing yet.

Try shimano sealed cable ends. I use them on the cables that are on seatstays. Haven't had any problems with rust and derailleurs seizing. Also, you may want to try putting a rubber boot between the rear derailleur cable's locking nut and the part where the cable goes in the derailleur. I have noticed that the bottom of the cable housing is pretty exposed there and the mud gets shot through the adjustment screw. Still, it hasn't made any problems for me, though.
