Warm Winter Road Riding
I'm looking to get away from the Colorado snow this winter for a week (late January), and wanted someplace with daytime warm (or hot) temp's and with good road rides. Rides in the 50 to 100 mile range, and hills would be welcome. I'd rather not have to "survive" in traffic, so decent shoulders and/or bike-conscious drivers would be a plus (maybe that's asking a bit much). One place I'm curious about is Death Valley NP, but the San Diego area is also a possibility as I have a close friend there. I'll probably drive, but I would consider flying. Any suggestions out there?
Thanks in advance.

Wow, good suggestion. That might deserve more than a week, though.

Does anyone out there have winter cycling experience in Death Valley?

Death Valley would likely be dryer and certainly less congested than both SD and Tucson...but maybe too much solitude for some people. I just learned that the average high temperatures for San Diego (65.8 F), Death Valley (64.9 F) and Tucson (64.5 F) in January are about the same. I wouldn't have guessed that San Diego would be warmer than Death Valley in any month...FWIW, the r/t mileage from Vail is: SD 1966, Death Valley 1616, Tucson 1682 . . .

I'd suggest Australia ... we're in late spring right now and will be in the midst of summer in January ... but you'd probably need longer than a week.
